Imagine that 2 people are going to share a room. One reserves the room with a credit card and then later on is unable to go. Why should the other party lose out on the room as well? I'd think just a phone call to the AP explaining the situation would allow the other person to submit a credit card in lieu of the one who can no longer attend.
One year I reserved 2 or 3 rooms on my credit card, and then handed off the other rooms to other people that I knew who were notorious for doing things at the last minute. This worked for me. I gave the people I knew (and trusted) my reservation numbers, and the AP was able to leave one room for me, and deal the rest out to my buddies.
(The new people still had to pre-pay for one night each, and my prepayment on rooms, was not refunded but applied to my own room.)

How far away is the Indian restaurant? Is that a few vegas blocks (conversion factor: 1 vegas block = 1 mile), or a few normal blocks?
I drove to it, but it was like one or two blocks north and one or two blocks to the east-- took less than 4 or 5 minutes to drive there from park to park.
This Map show a Jack In The Box (to the right) and the AP is to the left of UNLV[/url], but looking at the sat photograph, it does not bring back memories. The Indian food places was one block to the west of the Jack In the Box I remember (meaning 1 block closer to the AP.)
Maybe the Jack in the Box I am thinking of, has moved.
I'll try to look more to see if I can find the place.
There is/was the SubWay down the street from the AP that offers veggie sandwiches. There are two Indian food places north of the AP (one is a few blocks next to another sandwich shop, and the other is several blocks north.) Sushi can often be ordered that does not have fish in it-- you can special order rolls with avacado, and tempura in some places. There is always pizza (cheese only or cheese and no meat items.) If he is vegan it can be a bit more difficult, but there are always grocery stores. Thai food places are also good for veggie meals.
This site has a good guide to cheap hotels and food in vegas.
The food at the Pink Taco at the Hard Rock was pretty good, the guacamole was great. The burgers at Hamburger Marys were huge and tasty. I couldn't finish mine in one sitting. The other place I enjoyed was the Peppermill. It's very retro-swanky tacky (be sure to check out the fireplace in the bar) and the food was pretty good. I reccomend the nachos, they are huge and very good.
The problem I encountered the most was trying to find vegetarian options for the boyfriend. I'm a total carnivore, so finding good cheap eats was never a problem for me, but vegas is pretty bad for vegetarians.
I stayed the comfort inn a couple of years ago...My room faced the strip club next door...it was a little roudy and noisy at times, but, oh that was from us...I let someone crash with me that I met the 1st day of defcon.....the room was small - he slept on the floor...there wasn't even room for a cot...the bathroom tiny...and it was little dank...the 2 girls in the room next to us were working and they were really funny...they offered me a freebie at one point - didn't partake...shit they seemed to make a lot of money that weekend... they worked the Hard Rock...they said thursday night was usually their best...i think there were at least 3 other rooms that were conductin business transactions....oh and they guy at the front desk was creepy
I don't know if this is true, but my outsider's perspective leads me to believe that the Alexis Park does not free up the individual rooms when people cancel. Instead, the hotel staff waits until they get a sufficiently large block and then release them all at once. Last year when this happened we got a helpful post on the forums announcing this fact.
Rooms are sometimes reserved for special purposes and then released a few weeks before the Con for anyone.
[Story behind this has been removed]
There was no special "notify me" list. They were fist come, first serve after the notice was posted to the forums last year.
I have been calling the AP for awhile hoping for them to open another block of rooms or to have a cancel.

1. True "opinions" are never right or wrong, they are normally based on personal preference. Factual debate often time include "opinions," but only from people who didn't/don't know facts. The worth of the opined individual often times is measured by how they respond when presented with actual Fact.
2. There is no two. From that post Highwiz pointed out, you should focus on learning No. 1 well first.

ps. good thread hijack Highwiz!
Thank you spahnkle, I appreciate your wisdom!
I will keep this in mind for future posts.
I will try and focus on factual data rather than opinions. (Wrong or right, they dont go over too well here :-) )
