One year I reserved 2 or 3 rooms on my credit card, and then handed off the other rooms to other people that I knew who were notorious for doing things at the last minute. This worked for me. I gave the people I knew (and trusted) my reservation numbers, and the AP was able to leave one room for me, and deal the rest out to my buddies.
(The new people still had to pre-pay for one night each, and my prepayment on rooms, was not refunded but applied to my own room.)

I drove to it, but it was like one or two blocks north and one or two blocks to the east-- took less than 4 or 5 minutes to drive there from park to park.

This Map show a Jack In The Box (to the right) and the AP is to the left of UNLV[/url], but looking at the sat photograph, it does not bring back memories. The Indian food places was one block to the west of the Jack In the Box I remember (meaning 1 block closer to the AP.)
Maybe the Jack in the Box I am thinking of, has moved.

I'll try to look more to see if I can find the place.

Hamburger Mary's also has veggie burgers (which are also pretty large).

There is/was the SubWay down the street from the AP that offers veggie sandwiches. There are two Indian food places north of the AP (one is a few blocks next to another sandwich shop, and the other is several blocks north.) Sushi can often be ordered that does not have fish in it-- you can special order rolls with avacado, and tempura in some places. There is always pizza (cheese only or cheese and no meat items.) If he is vegan it can be a bit more difficult, but there are always grocery stores. Thai food places are also good for veggie meals.

This site has a good guide to cheap hotels and food in vegas.

The food at the Pink Taco at the Hard Rock was pretty good, the guacamole was great. The burgers at Hamburger Marys were huge and tasty. I couldn't finish mine in one sitting. The other place I enjoyed was the Peppermill. It's very retro-swanky tacky (be sure to check out the fireplace in the bar) and the food was pretty good. I reccomend the nachos, they are huge and very good.

The problem I encountered the most was trying to find vegetarian options for the boyfriend. I'm a total carnivore, so finding good cheap eats was never a problem for me, but vegas is pretty bad for vegetarians.

Rooms are sometimes reserved for special purposes and then released a few weeks before the Con for anyone.

There was no special "notify me" list. They were fist come, first serve after the notice was posted to the forums last year.
