We could kill two birds with one stone here. As the scene collectively gets older more and more of us are bringing our kids to defcon. We could start Defcon daycare. Attendees drop their kids off and they get watched by the moms of younger attendees. Everyone wins. Siviak's mom is exempt from this though, as she'll just teach the kids how to play blackjack and do jello shots. :)

she only goes to the talks so i have few worries about her learning of the pool 2 girl side of defcon

if mother attendance continues, i see something like momcon forming....

If you're interested in the content of the talks or participating in any of the contests but wish to avoid the adult oriented all night parties that start Wednesday and usually wind up sometime Monday then stay somewhere other than the AP and don't walk to the back of the grounds after the sun goes down.

I wouldn't bring my mom to con because she's dead. If she weren't, I wouldn't unless we were staying somewhere besides the AP/V. The parties do go all night and there are usually DJs spinning by the pools from sundown to sunrise. It is not quiet. I'm older and I find the drunken antics of some folks a little bit hard to take. Siviak did bring his mom, who is awesome and non-judgemental but I was embarrassed by some of the things she was exposed to and I spent most of the con sick in my room.

If your mom would object to public drunkeness, public nudity and/or beligerant drunken oversized mobile cum dumpsters whose only reason for being on the premises is to add notches to their bedposts then don't bring your mom. If your mom is a good conversationalist with a sense of humor and a knack for sarcasm and social commentary, bring her - she'll get along great with Siv's mom.

DefCon is just like any gigantic party full of strangers, if you're uncomfortable, walk away. If someone holding a bottle with a skull shaped stopper asks you if you like spicy food, run... just run.

note: the term "oversized mobile cum dumpster" is not intended to to represent any person, living or dead, who may or may not fit the description. The euphamism is in the public domain, to my knowledge and not tested on animals...

Sure you can bring your mum.... assuming she works in the sex industry and deals meth on the side.

Seriously.... look at the pics. Defcon is not PG-13. We hack, we learn, we catch up with old friends... but most importantly, we do what any self-respecting geek with a week's vacation in Las Vegas at company expense would do.... Hookers and blow.

A tip for avoiding most of "that stuff": the freaks come out at night.

Actually, that tip works both ways for those of us that want to encounter interesting people.

I go to Defcon for all the free porn and photo ops with industry celebs. Wait, thats AVN. Got them confused. We're the one with the ugly naked girls with low self esteem.

DefCon has some adult content that takes place at the hotel, but the official presentations are mostly timid.

So. What have you heard about DefCon?

I heard that evil hackers go there for evil password stealing. evily evilness.

Iv hade a conversation that pretty much went just like that before.

Like Abby Normal said, those things do go on, but its easy to avoid.

If you are concerned about drunk and rowdy people however, that is something that is virtually unavoidable. If you are just going for the talks you shouldn't be in for that much of a shock beyond a possible drunken heckle or two.

What most concerns you? You won't have to do anything you don't want to, and as long as you can accept that there are those who do want to partake in such things you will be fine.

I'd bring my mom to defcon, but she's really cool.

hell, if you want stripping AT defcon come find me,
