cheapest and most useful prepaid phones

    cheapest and most useful prepaid phones

    in our discussion about stuff to bring to defcon i had brought up the issue of clean phones. however, most of the prepaid phones i used to be a fan of seem harder to find. i don't care about how cool a phone looks or what spiffy features it has... i miss the days of incredibly cheap, basic prepaid wireless service.

    what phone(s) can anyone here suggest that are very inexpensive on the anonymous/prepaid market? if said phone(s) can be connected to a laptop and provide internet connectivity with those prepaid minutes, that would kick ultimate ass.

    any suggestions?

    Get a slurpy fone, thats what we call the verizon wireless POS monochromatic fones you can get at any verzion store for like under 60 bucks, and you can by the minutes a 7-11 hence the name slurpy fone.

    Thats what i use, its not a clean fone though, its just my everyday one.

      boostmobile and Vergin pre-paid services seem to work well, and you can get them on the cheap.

      Both cover Las Vegas land area

        has anyone had success with connecting any of those to a laptop for internet access? i'm assuming that like most low-end phones these probably don't have modem dial capability at all, but i figured i'd still ask.

          Not a prepaod fone, Never heard of one doing that. But I supposidly your supposed to be able to do it with one of verzions other modals

            some mid range, non-prepaid phones support standard Modem access, compleate with RS232 connection and AT command set. Sprint and Verizon have faily well supported this option on their networks. Verizon also has it's high speed broadband test network out here. From what I understand it's got 1.5meg (peak) bandwidth. Here and one other place (San Diego?) are running consumer tests on that.

              hmm... browsing Cingular's "Go Phone" service (i was pleased with their commercials in which people young and old look right into the camera and more or less say "fuck anyone who says they need your personal info... i just wanna talk on a goddamn phone" but not really in those words) and came across a very low-end model, the Sony Ericsson T237, which has a data connect cable listed under their accessories package. i can't find any specifics on how/if the computer internet connection is possible.

                you know, this sort of topic area would make a fantastic talk at DefCon, if you ask me. while i'm not entriely up to date on the legal status of things like unlocking GSM phones, swapping SIM cards, and creating relatively cheap anonymous intenet service with prepaid wireless service, i'm certain that a few people i could think of must be masters in this area. i wonder if Lucky225 ever travels west to give talks, he's probably down with all this info. think he's more of an east coast guy, however.

                  7-Eleven Speakout - Period - the best option.

                  It literally is the ultimate clean phone since it comes pre-activated. Walk in, purchase a phone, walk out, open the box and the number is printed on a card. There is no activation - pay with cash and there is no chance that you could be traced (unless they used security cameras - send someone else in to buy it for you).

                  The cheap models cannot be hooked up to a computer but run about ~$50 for a phone and $10 of airtime. They use the Cingular network and offer GPRS WAP access which can be tethered to a computer at 2 cents a KILOBYTE - this is not cheap.

                  The Motorola v180 ($150 - Rebates) has a Mini-USB port built in.

                    Some of these phones have a dollar a day charge to maintain, heck you may as well et a new phone from a kiosk then trade it in after Defcon and just pay for the airtime.
