Someone get him the "LASER". This should be pretty awesome to see. If the equipment comes through.

Yeah, I got a stunt in mind.
I'm not sure what the ILDA Vertex protocol is. The DB-25 standard ILDA connector I'm familiar with was standard analog signalling (X+Y+R+G+B+Shutter, etc). I know of one free program that looks pretty good, and can drive the LinuxLaser's DAC project... the problem is, my galvos are really slow. Keep meaning to buy a set of Eyemagic's or Catweazle galvos, but never seem to have the free money. Plus with the USD to Euro exchange rate what it is it makes it that much more expensive. And I need a PCAOM. About $1200 for the galvos, about $3000 for an 8 channel PCAOM.
I own a 5 watt Spectra Physics multiline argon system, a 100mw-200mw ALC-90x style multiline argon system, and a few smaller lasers (20mw HeNe, 15mw single line 488nm argon). I have some slower galvos (G120PDs and General Scanning open loop). Was into the laser and light stuff a while ago. Recently been playing with the FreeStyler DMX software for Windows along with two HES Intellabeam 400 lights and a 750 watt ADJ strobe. Want to get away from the Intellabeam 400s since their DMX-512 implementation is bad and they are creaky.
Large argon lasers require about 2-3 gallons of water a minute and about 30 amps @ 3phase @ 208vac. Not small by any means. The generator set (~60kw?) they generally have at Defcon that runs the outdoor tent could indeed power the laser. I noticed the 3 phase cam locks running the AC units. Pretty cool.
Where it gets REALLY tricky is this. 1st, anything above 5mw requires CDRH certification on the projector. To comply with the law you need to file paperwork that your going to do a show. Last thing anyone needs is vision damage from people playing with high powered lasers. The paperwork should be filed and things setup safely.... *I* wouldn't want to be around others playing with higher powered lasers. There are people selling 3 watt DPSS handhelds now. Accidents waiting to happen.
Second, the AP is right next to an airport. Need I say more? With all of the press, all it will take is a nice unterminated skybound 1 watt 523nm beam without paperwork and defcon will be crawling.
Pictures of my laser hacking are visible on my web page:
http://users.757.org/~ethan/ and photos are availible at:
http://users.757.org/~ethan/pics/lasers/
I was using a laser illusions system (Windows 98 software that runs a parallel port device that provides the ILDA spec output, with open loop scanners on Accel 124 amps... maybe 8kpps speed... ).Last edited by telemonster; July 17, 2005, 16:33.
