Not going to DefCon?

Since we were talking about this on #dc-forums tonight, I'm curious as to who won't be going to DefCon this year.

Kryonik won't be, on account of the lacking employment thing. I think I heard Pezz won't be either. Mee is, last I heard (about a day ago)... she's the one planning the girl meet. Lost isn't, new job.

It is looking more and more like this will be the case. Assume I won't be there. If things clear up on this end, and I happen to show up, then cool-deal. However, ATM, assume I won't be there.

Here is my take on this.

New folks go to Defcon every year but those of us who are a kindred spirit attend year after year. We may have started attending whilst in high school, hence July made the perfect time to let loose.

Every year we will see newbies at Defcon, slack-jawed at what some people do to themselves and others. They too will grow, and then one day, what happened to us will happen to them. They get a job right after high school or college.

Now it's June and they are really unsure about getting a vacation just one month into their new job, so they skip Defcon. And what was easy to skip once will be easy to skip again. You think back at your interaction with everything from feds to mammaries, and you smile. But you gotta hunker down at work. You stare into your closet longlingly at your Defcon t-shirts, smiling at some thoughts, and shuddering at others. You think how you don't wear t-shirts any more and wonder what to do with them.

Your old.
Your boring.
Your 30.

Is some or all of this thread a "DefCon has been Canceled" type of thing? HighWiz are you not thowing TBBQ and an afterparty?

Is this like that "I love you but I'm not _IN LOVE_ with you" type of things (E.g. "I'm going to be in Vegas but not _AT DefCon_")
