so, while relaxing earlier this evening in a state of significant mental elevation (as evidenced by a long, rambling, and semi-coherent post to a recent thread in which i called for mass, non-violent revolution against a hotel or something) i decided that tv was sucking hardcore and that i would rummage through a drawer of VHS tapes to find some quality comedy programming.
i came across a tape marked "Drew Carey Comedy Central Special" which seemed promising enough. i have to tell you, future generations who grow up with Tivo and PVR technologies may never know the supreme enjoyment had from the viewing of old commericals. they're like a whole VH1 program of nostalgic clips and references to the past packed into 2 minutes.
anyway, this recording of a comedy central broadcast must date from around 1998 or 1999 (commercials for the second season of south park, viva variety, and the daily show with craig kilborn were seen) right around the time when the internet was a corporate buzzword and the whole idea of computer security was a mysterious and hard-to-grasp concept by many.
back when hackers were a non-descript boogeyman and data compromise was pictured by many as something akin to an attack by a platoon of magical bears, IBM put out this commercial [4 MB, XviD codec], served with a heaping side of FUD, to let corporate clients know that there was someone to turn to with concerns about "those evil computer criminal who must be kept at bay."
some may disagree, but i found it a pretty funny glimpse at the past. much has changed, but much has stayed the same.
p.s. - if anyone wants to mirror that file, feel free. my cable modem will thank you
