I have been trying to get Slackware onto my machine for ages! I use Windows and it is a pain in the ass. The closest i've ever gotten to having Linux on my machine is i boot Knoppix off a disk, but every time i reboot or take the disk out it erases everything i've done. Correct me if i'm wrong but is the net the only place to find a copy of Slackware? If so, then how do you download it off the net and onto your machine? Can anyone give me any advice or links or even instruction on how to get Slackware onto my machine.

P.S. Plz dont give me www.slackware.com because i've been there and I couldnt figure it out.

You can buy 4 CDs from them. The other option is to download the ISO files and burn to CDs.

Once you have the CDs, you boot from the first and install from there.

Join a "LUG" (Linux Users' Group) in your area, as they often have "InstallFests" where users are invited to bring machines and have experienced users help them with the installation of Linux.

Okay. Here's what you need to know about obtaining Slackware:

As of Slack 10, they abandoned ISOs via ftp/http and went to Bitorrent as the sole distribution method. This is great from a bandwidth preservation perspective, but kinda sucky from a 'me download now' one. Anyway, install a bitorrent client, visit the Torrents page to get the URL to use with that client, and download. Once you've done that, check the md5sums to make sure they're not altered and as long as everything matches up you're set.

It's really not that bad, and much better than a few years ago where it looked as though they were about to lose all their hosting because the cost of supporting it far outweighed the donations. Which reminds me: Slack users, donate.

Just out of curiousity ... WHY do you want to have slackware specifically? There are tons of debian and gentoo based distros that are really really easy to install.

Ubuntu is pretty good if you want gnome with linux WITHOUT just about any kind of media codec under the sun.

SUSE linux is good if you want something that is easy like cake but not rediculous like redhat.

MEPIS linux is good if you want debian linux ( which most people do ) with a lot of other stuff already nicely added to it.

Or words to that effect, anyway. And quite frankly, if you can't cope with Slackware's CLI installer (which tells you EXACTLY what to do at each stage of the installation), you should probably not be running anything that involves interaction beyond pointy-clicky eye candy.

You'll note that the poster originally asked for places to download Slack from, not comparative analyses with other distributions. Congratulations, you just answered a question that was never asked.
