  • Saw this at DefCon

    I'm not a Mac user so if I'm not sure if this is a Mac feature but I saw couple of teams at WarGames and they had powerbooks( I think one dude from kenshoto had it running too) but it was friggin cool.

    It was basically one desktop and when switching to another desktop, the entire screen rotated 3 dimensionally. Is this something with the Mac OS or is it some sort of nix app?

    I'm not a Mac person, but you can get the same effect in Linux with 3D-Desktop, http://desk3d.sourceforge.net/. I set it up a few times for fun. Even with an Nvidia card and accelerated drivers, if you do a lot of desktop switching, it will take some resources.

      right on....it was almost like that but it didn't drop back into the background, it actually flipped like if you were flipping a card over. thanks for the link though, I'll try that out on my linux box.

        He was using the fast user switching feature in MacOS most likely. Its used to switch from one user to another, but they made it look cooler than it does in any other operating system.

        Or he could have been using the graphic libraries for that animation in an open source virtual desktop program like Space to make the switching look cooler, but thats unlikely.
        The dude abides.

            Windows also has a variant of this, called Sphere XP . But it is not used for quick login.
            Did Everquest teach you that?

              Your buying a Mac because the user switching do some cool flipping 3D effect?

              Is there any other reason?

                  • I do graphics and video editing which from a graphics standpoint, apple is the de facto standard
                  • The OS is based on unix
                  • The cool effect is just a nice "perk" that get's thrown in the package.
                  • Probably the most compelling reason........BECAUSE I CAN 8===D

                    No need to justify yourself... I was just trolling about the fact you seem to want OS X based on that 3D user swithing thing...

                    I am a mac user myself
