  • MAC and Gamin eTRex

Alright, it is funny how after one serious night of relapse defcon drinking (HPNOTIQ/Belvedere> straight Belvedere) can render me to this question.

I have a mac 12" powerbook and as of a year back I could not get it to connect to my yellow garmin eTex. I have the garmin serial cable and a no name serial to usb cable to connect the two.

When I check the "about this mac" it shows the generic usb to serial device but no garmin? Any ideas? Am I missing something?

Yes, as an avid defcon member i do not partcipate in brand sponsorship unless i am being compensated.
There fore I will continue to misspell all kinds of shit untill i'm paid!

.......And if garmin ever does come out with an eTex service and doesn't contact me about it, i'll sue.

I too have had problems with my Garmin. Have you contacted their customer support? I did, and they were helpful, also, there is a group, me thinks its on Yahoo, for the Garmin products. Helpful bunch they are. How long is the cable between the Garmin and your laptop? I had a problem when using a cable over about 3 feet. Hope it helps.
        I got a .45 and a shovel, and I ain't afraid to use either.

I have the yellow eTrex...but my PB is a 15". Shouldn't make a difference though. I haven't had any problems.

Careful with those USB/serial adapters, they are not all created equal.

Make sure you have your serial communications set to use the right protocol. For example you want to be using NMEA for things like netstumbler, but if you are trying to push a Garmin firmware update you need to be set to 'Garmin'. That could be the problem, the GPS unit may not be speaking a language your Mac understands.

I have done the correct settings as far as the garmin goes (NMEA) but it all stops at the garmin in the apple profiler it reconizes the usb>serial adapter and then no garmin, I have been thinking of scraping the whole etrex for a new bluetooth setup but the whole mystery keeps calling me.
