  • Phone calls with a 56k modem

Hey all, I might need to lurk more around before posting anything. But I am trying something here at home and couldn't find anything on google, or I have been entering the wrong keywords. First I'll explain what I want to try : I'm trying to hook up my phone to the computer via a 56k modem, and I want to use the connection to receive and make ordinary phone calls.

I was hoping anyone could tell me whether this is possible, and if it is possible, give me some hints how to find information about this, or if you don't mind posting links, it would took of some time for searching ;)

Anyway I have been looking at google with the following keywords, but only found modem information or providers and information for VoIP :

(dutch keywords) telefoongesprekken via 56k modem
Hook up phone to computer to make calls
telephony from computer using a modem

I couldn't get any other ideas about keywords. So I hope any of you could help me out.

    Thanks in advance

The short answer is that you can't. A PCI slot doesn't provide enough power to provide service.

On the off chance that somebody has figured out a way to do it, the keyword you are looking for is "FXS".

Note that "voice modems" provide FXO ports .. that is, they plug into the wall but do not, as you want, support a standalone phone.

is there any other peripheral hardware that can generate a dial tone / support phone handsets? i know that i've really loved the idea of having a PBX style box that could do encrypted VoIP but which would allow me to use an off-the-shelf telephone instead of sitting by the computer with its speakers and mic. (and yes, i realize that the security factor of such a setup drops a lot of one is using a wireless phone from the local radio shack)

DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Please further define your inquiry.. do you mean...

VoIP through a 56k connection (or something from yesterdork, like dialpad)?
Asterisk from your POTS (google something like FXO card)
Or simply connecting your cat3 to the phone port on your modem?
Or trying to split voice and data traffic through one POTS without dropping connectivity?
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

With the help of the other post I was able to find something what might help you. To generate the dail tone and all that junk you can use this link: http://www.hackaday.com/entry/1234000430062396/

Then you can make a asterisk pbx on a wrt54g using this link:

Not sure how much help these links will be to you. I thought I might share them just in case.

I read it as him having some kind of unspecified broadband connection, and using a modem he pulled out of the junk pile to try and connect his computer to his phone for making phone calls over the internet.

Besides having an FXS card to produce dialtone for the phone, he's need some kind of service to bridge his voip call to the pstn -- if thats what he wants. I don't think there's very many free services that would do that.

one could always have a computer at the other end of the connection capable of dialing out with its modem... i.e. - he places VoIP calls as needed, but for regular calls he VoIPs to the other box (perhaps at a company office with company phone lines) and does a little magical whatnot, then that box places an outgoing call for him on the POTS line at that facility. a pretty neat way of doing things, if you ask me. could make for some very anonymous calling.

Yeah, that works. Not exactly a standalone system in his house at that point, though.

Anyway... he still phrased his request pretty badly.
