  • Defcon craft show

OK, we will be having the first hacker craft show at this years forum meet.

If you make something bring it to show off. Knit, sew, brew whatever. Show everyone how crafty you are!

Email or message me with any questions.

Anyone who brings something will get lots of free booze at my party!

If you are desperate for entries, I did make something, but it is.... well, it's functional, not pretty. I made a sleeve for my laptop out of an old pair of pants. I was hesitant to show it, because it reflects my sewing skill, which is none. The stitching is fugly, but it should hold up to most of the abuse I dish out.

Sure! Bring it! This isn't a contest, just a chance for people to say "look what I made!".

I find that so many of us work at jobs that produce little or no tangable results. Crafting gives us a chance to make something you can see and feel and share. I can tell my mom about a perl script I wrote, and she'll say "that's nice dear" But she never misses a chance to show off the hand made lace xmas ornaments I made for her. My brother can't tell you what his sister does for a living, but has framed lace doileys hanging on his walls

I'm rambling. The point is you made something with your own hands and you should be proud!

The projects don't have to be hacker/computer related. Just something you, a hacker, has made.

I don't think I have any of my lace here to bring, but I am going to be showing off some of my knitting and crochet work.

And some people might think my hair counts as a project!

Actually, just for this reason, I am a bit proud. But I also try to be embarrassed, because I know the stitching looks bad. But HEY, it works and it saved money!

Actually, mostly my cooking falls under this category. My diet is so strange that cooking tends to be a hacking experience. I do so many substitutions that the product is heavily modified but hopefully still recognizable by the time I'm done.

I'd like to see that. I still have a hard time seeing myself as a crocheter/knitter, but my time would be a hell of a lot more productive if I were. It probably also doesn't help that my mother was a crocheter (who is also a sewer and the reason why I am positively allergic to sewing, except for sewing for computers ;).

              Re: Defcon craft show

When I was 7 my Mom taught me how to knit, then when she was pregnant with my little sister I knitted pink booties for her. I did pretty good too. Then I turned 8 and my leet skillz started going downhill after that.

This sounds great! I can't wait to see everyones stuff!

I'm not sure how we are going to display everything yet. I think they are providing tables. I will bring some cards for people to put their details on. Hopefully they can spare some goons to keep an eye on everything.

Anyone have any ideas for a hacker craft logo?

I hope you have signs for where all this will be. Or at the very least, phone me!

The craft show will be in the Skybox during the forum meetup. And the party is in our suite.
