Would it be possible to change the file system to FAT32? Im not sure if that would do anything helpful. Or if its even possible to convert from NTFT to FAT32. Defrag?

Where in the above posts did you see anything even remotely related to NTFS (Just a SWAG it was that you meant when you wrote NTFT) or any other Microsoft originated filesystem ?

Try Stellar Phoenix for Linux - stellarinfo.com. They have a demo, which will allow you to view what files can be recovered. You will need to buy the full version to salvage these files. Good luck.

e2recover is on helix linux distro. Maybe that's your best best

So I got a nice surprise on the weekend. My internal server (OK, box with a bunch of spare disks in it) started throwing up I/O errors. A quick reboot and my photo/music drive is now non-mountable, complaining of errors.

A few fsck's later and the problem has'nt corrected itself. Seems the superblock has gone AWOL. The drive is spinning and is recognized, but the file system has shite itself.

Yes, I should have the backup superblock addresses recorded, yes I should have had backups, but I don't and now I'm left with this situation.

Foremost (http://foremost.sourceforge.net/) is getting some of it back, but is'nt maintaining file names or directory structure, it's also inexact and not recovering everything intact.

Any utilities (free or commercial) that can help rebuild the filesystem. Any advice (other than to drink and backup my crap) on how best to repair an EXT3 drive?
