  • Nevada’s new smoking laws and Def Con?

    http://www.klas-tv.com/Global/story.asp?S=5653832

So…Where will “us smokers” be allowed to smoke at the next Con? Not In the rest area they serve food there. And there’s been an endless debate on weather or not smoking in the speaking areas and the vender area are ok … so do we have to go to the casino floor to smoke? Or outside?

Just follow Roamer around. If there is only one square foot in Nevada where one may smoke, he will find it.

Unless it's in an Apple store. :-)

Are you sure about that? If it made people from Apple suffer, there is a chance for that whole, "two birds, one stone," metaphor. 0:-)

This idea about limiting smoking in Las Vegas is unbelievable. I always figured that Las Vegas would be a last standoff for not having laws to limit smoking. It has legalized access to two other vices (drinking, gambling) and if you consider sex/prostitution a vice, then at least 3 vices. Smoking just seems to fit-in with vices, and would seem to be accepted or desired by people with the other vices listed.

Anyone have guesses as to when laws will be passed for places like Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and Reno to require smoking/no-smoking sections on casino floors?

In California they had commercials where people in bars were asked to leave because they smoked. I guess that really cuts down on the number of people who get in the car and drive after 12 cigarettes. Then again the people with 12 tequilas in them just drive home, most the time.

Not to get on politics. I do not smoke. I don't care about second hand smoke, it's a big planet. I don't care about it being a bad habit, I have some too. I hate it because of the same reason it is illegal to smoke on California beaches: Because of the butts that some litter behind.

A small group ruins it for everyone, just like why we have gun laws.

As much as some are lead to believe, sex/prostitution is not legal here in Vegas. In fact, there are strict laws for even nudity & exhibition with some steep fines if you are caught. Yes, prostitution is legal in some Nevada counties – ones with a population below a certain number. For more info, Google for 'pahrump'; the closest town to Vegas with legal brothels. You should find what you are looking for there.

As for the smoking laws, they were just passed last week. Give the politicos some tine to figure out what they screwed up. In fact, IIRC the proposed laws have to go through another election & pass to become the law of the land.

Im sure that in Vegas they might be a little bit more strict, But here in Ohio they passed the no smoking in public places/ buildings this last year. And unless your at Applebees or someplace like that the whole ban thing lasted what two days. I've been in countless restaurant since and nobody says a thing to us for lighting up.

I help out at a local night club and we sell cigarettes, and people ask all the time, can we get back in if we go out to smoke, and all you can do is laugh and tell them nobody cares if you smoke inside, the cops even come in every once and a while and none of them have ever said a thing, even though the state mandatory no smoking stickers are on the door.

So like I said im sure Vegas will play by different rules but if its anything like here, two days and nobody will even remember/enforce the law.

Re: Nevada’s new smoking laws and Def Con?

I've lived in two cities with smoking bans. One was a little more draconian than the other: it banned all indoor smoking, while in the other they allowed separate smoking areas with isolated ventilation systems. This allowed for a lot of leeway: often the doors were left open on the smoking areas so they were just rooms you'd go in when you wanted to smoke, and not some cordoned off area of the bar. In some the "isolated ventilation system" was broken and they filled with thick, nauseating levels of smoke.

A statewide ban ended all of that. I haven't seen anyone try to smoke in a bar, but I can only assume the bartenders would bitch them out and tell them to go outside. There's still a few bars with outdoor areas/rooftop decks which are integrated into the areas you can have booze, and often have niceties like heat lamps to make up for the bitter Colorado cold.

What sort of treatment will we get in Vegas? Probably one more like yours. But that's not necessarily the case.

Well.. Im not a smoker.. but even I have smoked in Vegas. I mean its Vegas.. its like not having a restroom at a bar.. it makes no sense..

As one of the other guys here said to me the other day "its more politically correct to fart in public than it is to smoke".

The fine to a bar who allows smoking in Las Vegas is between $100-$700. Bars here have removed ashtrays and put up no smoking signs, but they let you borrow special "sausers" for use of an ashtray. The fine, quote "It's a cost of doing business".

I've had "interesting" conversations with people here during the debate and after it passed. At the end of the day, IMHO (Very Humble), two things come to mind about the smoking ban here:

1.) The libertarian in me says, "If it's my business, let me do as I please, do not patron it if you don't like smoke"

2.) You can gamble and drink in a bar, but you can't smoke? Bars, IMHO, should be a vice safe haven.

FWIW: Bars that do not serve "prepaired food", I.e. only sell chips, etc in a bag from manufacture, can allow smoking in inside. "Bar & Grills" cannot.

I think you'll have to head out to where the dunk tank and beer cooling contests were held, right off the main floor.

Smoking and Vegas are like chocolate and peanut butter. It will be a cold day in Hell before it is banned in casinos. As far as Defcon goes, I don't have a problem with the other rules. So many con peeps are cool with us...I go out of my way to blow smoke the other direction.

The libertarian in me says let people smoke where they want to, I've already seen some quality restaurants go from successful 24hrs diners, to nearly defunct businesses because of the smoking ban.

Cook County Illinois just banned smoking in buildings and 15 feet away from entrances, and one of the smokers on T.V. summed it up best, that government either needs to stop being the public's nanny with what's good for them, or outright ban the sales of all tobacco with the smoking ban, but that won't ever happen with all the taxes that come in from selling cigarettes.
