    Please excuse me if this is a cave meme (I don't know how old it is and can only assume that unless it's fresh it ended up on DCMC) but I found it hilarious:

    heh, just added that to my filler archive for next year's DCTV
    "I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

          Ha ha ha, yep, that's the purpose of l33tsp33k alright.

          Little do they know, the truth is far more shocking and terrible: l33tspeak is not designed to keep parents in the dark... it's completely and utterly pointless.

            If this is a language used by, "advanced computer users," I guess I am average or below average.

            Let's play a little logical game:
            A claim is made, that letting teens use this language is dangerous.
            What is attempted when people use this language:
            1) Peer pressure from peers that use it, to encourage conformity
            2) An attempt to obfuscate a conversation is made to establish some privacy between teens
            3) Laziness: abbreviations, substitutions mean fewer keystrokes (in some cases)

            Is there anything else? If not, then atl least one of these three things must be dangerous, if we assume the original assertion is true.

            My vote is for privacy being dangerous. Yes. So, there should be no privacy? So, a lack of privacy is safer than privacy? Inforation just wants to be free? What?

            (*scratching my head here*)

            Ohhhh. I get it! Other people having privacy is dangerous, but me having privacy is a good thing. I get it now!
            int main() {
            double Standard = 1.0;
            return ((double)Standard == (double)true);
            }

            heh-heh. "(double)true" heh heh.

            Hey... why am I the only one laughing here? ]:>

            (BTW, that code fragment does compile and run, without any #includes too. ;-)

                Ah, but you are not a teenager. Such talk can be used by teenagers to distinguish between those that are new and those that have been around awhile. Perhaps adults are less inclined to use such language because there is less pressure to form cliques.

                Then there are those people that discover leet speak as an in-joke and use it for a lark. Everyone in the world had their laugh and moved on, but the idea is still fresh to younger people who don't realize the joke is dead.

                I can't seriously believe that anyone is using this simple "code" to hide information from their parents. Sure it makes things a little more difficult for eavesdroppers, but they can read between the lines ... the "language" is based on English, after all.

                Most people want their privacy because they don't trust those doing the snooping. Of course, these same people also tend to be the snoopers at every opportunity because they, unlike everyone else, have the best of intentions.

                And yes, I know that I'm, once again, giving a serious response to a joke. Oh well.

                      Nobody should worry though. They showed a translator in that segment. Type in l33t and get real english back. So all parents should make sure that have it on their computer, laptop, PDA, cell phone and a pocket reference. That way, whenever they see l33t they can translate it and realize that their kids really aren't saying anything important to begin with.

                        Yes, I am surprised they exposed one of our most powerful and useful tools so freely on this segment. Now I don't know WHO will get their hands on this.

                              Oh yes, that leet speak is a slippery slope.

                              A guy at work used leet speak. Ten years later, BAM! herpes.
