Not sure if this is the right place on the forums but:

I have to do a project for my "International Policy of Science and Technology" class, and I know I want to do something on communications security, but I'm not quite sure what will still be a hot topic a couple months from now, and I don't want to work on something that will get written and then forgotten (a waste of time, imho) - so I thought I'd field the question here and see if there's anything that people here really want to know about. If something important does get produced by me, affected by opinion here or not, I'll put it up somewhere public if people are interested.

Essentially, it has to be something where there aren't any policies in place, or those policies are crap and are being challenged, and whatever the issue is, is on an international plate and affects more than just one country (likewise, the same issues in different countries, but they are dealing with it in different ways, and that is affecting each other in an adverse manner). Also, the teacher seems completely uninterested in anything involving bittorrent and copyrights. So...what are you all following intently in the news (including the past couple of articles I've seen in this subforum?)?

Perhaps it is too broad of a topic, but something that I expect will see continuing relevance in the coming years is the idea of "who should control the Internet", and by that I mean the role of individual governments vs. international organizations and such.

There's a huge need to do something about spam, particularly phishing scams. A lot of that is international in nature, and the technical mechanisms in place to stop it are largely ineffective. Plus, it's easy to research, and you might accidentally invent something that is useful to a lot of people.

These are all really good ideas guys, thanks! ...I think I'm going for net neutrality; hopefully I can do it justice and produce something useful (I'm sure the prof will appreciate the effort too ). Though a fix for spam would be great - apparently this university (or maybe just my department?) doesn't believe in closing off mailing lists to just registered users, which would be a useful thing (no thanks, I don't need any viagra today though it was nice of you to offer).
