most of my wrenching has been on the same. Most cars with onboard computers get alot harder to service without error codes since most adjustments are made by the computer, not the wrench. Hence all the legal sniping over access to those codes.

The principals are the same, but to mange a quote : "as the complexity of a system approaches infinity, the mean fix ability approaches zero"

There is also the point at which to make all the necessary repairs costs more than the thing is worth. It's important to know when to just shoot the damn horse. Buy me a beer and I'll tell you about the RenderVan sometime.

Depending on what was wrong with it, most cars from the last 10 years or so reach a level of complexity that make me nervous to work on them. Sometimes the easiest way is just to pay someone to deal with it.

Yeah, I do agree, but I am trying to get over it. Most of my wrenching has been on cars from the 70s and 80s. And I've never owned a bike that was fuel injected, so this stuff is like black magic to me.

Recently, Icetre got a 2005 GTO, which has really inspired me to get up to speed on modern cars. It's a sexy beast!

Besides, I hate being at the mercy of mechanics. At the very least I like to understand what's wrong so as not to get ripped off.

Not to sound like a bitch, but don't you think I already tried that BEFORE risking a post here? I have had Haynes or Chilton guides for almost every vehicle I have ever owned!

For this car however, I was out of luck. Much to my suprise I found one on the shelf for my other roommates 96 geo.

It doesn't really matter anymore, the yutz has decided to pay someone else to fix it for him. I guess being in mensa means you are too smart to pick up a wrench or something. Watching him try to figure out the buses was worth all the hassle! :-)

Googling for "Haynes" or "Chilton" in combination with "manuals" will get you a number of online outlets for the books, too.

My choice has always been for the Haynes manuals, available at most auto parts stores. I don't know if there's a Mercedes manual for that model, as I've never had occasion to look for one, but they've published one for every car I've worked on, and they usually cover models going back to the 1970's.

I'm doing some work on my roomates car, and I need to find a shop manual for a 1998 Mercedes e320 w210. So far none of the normal sources have had anything. I think I may have to go straight to the company, and I'm not sure they'd even sell me one since I am not an offical mercedes mechanic.

Any suggestions would be helpful. Drop me a pm please.

Again, I am sorry for the ot post, but I need to get this car fixed!
