    worried/annoyed/angry/disappointed
Only thing in this thread that made me feel all that at once, is the eye-strain red text above.

TheCotMan's definition in first page sums up the question in this topic neatly.

Thing is, when we asked those 'how do I hack my schools lab computer' question back in the early 90s, we got the same shit flipped at us. The result is that you are forced to go out on your own and do research (you kids with your WWW have it easy). While doing research you'll eventually figure out what hacking is all about, why those other people gave you so much shit, how you deserved it, and how you can start doing things that will advance your knowledge and skills. Working with others in places like your local LUGs can be a great source of information, even if everyone is at the same skill level. Problem solving always goes easier when you have at least one expert, but that said, even a bunch of newbies can come up with a viable solution to a problem if they all put their heads together.

Re: does anyone really hack anymore?

Being fairly new to hacking, here's the way I see it.

The problem nowadays is that it's difficult for those that would be interested in true hacking to find the information they need and a mentor to help them.

Because of the mainstream media calling anybody that illegally breaks into a network a hacker and even true hacking that should be legal being considered illegal (like the HD DVD hex code) it turns off those that would be interested in hacking and turns on script kiddies who think that they can be internet superstars with nothing but a simple click-click.

I can testify to this because that was my way of thinking until a several years ago. I wanted to learn more about technology but hated "hackers" (as defined by mainstream media). Then about 5 years ago I ran into a little article entitled "How To Become A Hacker" http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html

That was when I learned what hacking really was, but I still couldn't find anyone that could help me out, so I plugged along learning what I could.

Today I have a great resource in my Linux User Group. Beyond that earlier this year some local security professionals ran a hacking competition and it was one of the most rewarding experiences I've had. Not because I was cracking networks, but because of what I learned. It taught me so much about how systems and networks work. It was about learning, thinking and using those to manipulate a system to do what you wanted it to.

Hacking isn't about breaking the law, it's about learning, thinking and using.

To the excellent definition of what is a hacker, I would humbly add: "Someone who cannot stay put, who cannot sit his ass on the same chair for long, who is always looking for something new to investigate".

One example that came to mind when I started reading this thread was the guys from L0pht - their site used to be a pretty good reference on pager tinkering, digital radio modes, and a ton of other stuff. They then moved on and became @stake, pushing LC and other nice tools (but basically became software-only, no trace of the "good old days"). Eventually they got bought by Symantec. Notice a pattern? Tinker for fun and beer, move on to tinker to pay bills, and finally sell the tinkershop for some good money.

Is there anything wrong with this? IMHO not really, it's the natural progression of life. I wonder how many of the folks you see at DC sporting tattoos and enough "jewelry" pierced on their bodies to make a DHS screener faint, will look like than when they are past 40? Same with everything else - people move on.

How many of you have toyed with the same stuff for more than a few years? The early hardcore wardrivers, for example, do we really do it with the same passion or frequency as in 2002-2004? Probably not, but that hasn't stopped us from tinkering with plenty of other stuff.

On the topic of generations, I agree with converge, I also hope the retardness comes in cycles.

    Cheers,

    Mother

PS Thorn: punchcards? The whitness of your hair just went up a couple of notches ;)

There are those who tinker and those who crack. I think perhaps there will always be newbees that do not understand their own technology and it's protective features or lack there of. The last Windows firewall for XP for example fails inbound protection on two ports one of which is port 80. Windows browser is full of lovely buggie holes so it also can be exploited and once inside past the browser Windows firewall has no outbound protection. As long as security tools are poorly made there will be a crack for a hack... As long as there are newbees there will be lurkers in wait. Cracking will never vanish unless security becomes perfect and we all are 100% savvy and even then no technology is perfect.

Im only 18 from TN i've only had computer access since around the 7th grade i'm not to savvy but I know what i'm doing, the only hacking i've ever done was taking my nintendo apart cause it didnt work but they were easy to repair so I started fixing my friends broken systems N64, playstation simple solder job thats what normally went wrong wires coming undone stuff of that nature it didnt matter I liked working with my hands. The only hacking I do now is for the navy, i'm a hospital corpsman i patch the marines up when they get hurt i'm about to go on another deployment with the marines in fact it'll be fun kind of well not really but uncle sam can't tax combat pay so there's an upside to it, but like you were saying hacking doesn't equal criminal but doing stupid things usually does especially when you do it for bragging rights cause you scream noob much like how i must sound because i don't know very much about the subject but all I have to say is what my mom always told me if you know its wrong don't do it. oh shoot when i did the quick reply my previous message didn't show up so i retyped everything sorry guys i didn't mean to reply to my own message I apologize it's my fault.

That's because, like a lot of people, you are obviously confusing hacking with criminal activity.

Frankly, I deeply resent the implication that hacking equals criminal activity, and I resent that people such as yourself consider your criminal actions to be hacking. That only enforces the stereotype of Hacker = Criminal. As an active hacker over 35 years, I have never committed a criminal act. In my opinion, people who do get caught perpetuating such crimes deserve everything that they get. In fact, I'd be a lot happier with longer, more stringent sentences for such crimes. The phrase "Throw away the key" certainly comes to mind.
