  • Stuff you are planning to do in Vegas before or after DC15...

I'm looking to see Blue Man Group, and go to a shooting range.
I may go see Penn and Teller too.
Visiting different buffets is also on my list.

The Atomic (bomb) Museum sounds cool too.

How about the rest of you? Have plans to do stuff before or after con, other than con-related things?

all three of those are on my list, actually. i heard that if you go rather early to the P&T show at the Rio you can sometimes get into the house before they begin officially and Penn will tend to be just chilling onstage, jamming a bit with his bass etc. You can hang out with P&T and just rap with them about anything, or have them sign/defile any religious liturgy that you present to them for an autograph.

as for shooting, for many years now we've been organizing get-togethers are one of vegas' two well-known ranges that rent Class-III weapons. maybe we can coordinate a time to get a group again this year. (no offense to anyone, but chances are that such a group -- at least, any group of which i'm an organizing element -- will consist almost exclusively of people i've met in person, not just on the forums, for whom i can solidly vouch for non-asshat status. i just don't need to be anywhere near a firing line with someone holding an AK in full rock-and-roll mode unless i've gotten to know them first)

i'm in town wednesday, how 'bout you?

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I don't get into town until Thursday morning, but if you're planning on going to the range anytime after that, I'm in. Having already been on the wrong end of someone's AK-47, I hope to qualify for non-asshat status

Which end of that AK did you like being on again?

I'll be in about my usual time, 2PM on Thursday. I'd be interested in any Thursday PM activities.

            Fremont Street Experience

I intend to take time to see the Fremont Street Experience downtown. I plan on taking the bus downtown one evening.

Please post info if the shooting range idea comes together. I was in attendance at the Defcon shoots in past years and would be interested if some one can find another place to hold this.

When I went to see P&T 2 or 3 years ago, they invited people up on stage to examine and inspect the elements of their magic tricks to see what they could find. I went up for that and looked at them and played with them. They had a really good show on, of all things, politics and freedom of speech doing some things that might be controversial, but likely in-line with many of the thoughts of people on these forums. (No more details that than-- sorry.)

i'm in town wednesday, how 'bout you?
I am arriving Monday with a buddy of mine from Europe. He is more into firearms than me, so I would have to check with him on the schedule, but I'm guessing that he would be fine with this. (I'll vouch for this guy. I've known him for over 8 years, and the restrictions in many European countries for Gun ownership require being responsible and members of Gun Clubs with lots of experience on ranges before advancing to higher caliber weapons.) If you would prefer not to include him, I totally understand, and we can go on our own. If you are going to the same range as us, check the web, as they have had coupons for like $5, $10, or $15 off when you pay more than $100. [I just checked. it looks like $5 off the rental of machine guns.]

I've got my Blue Man group tickets now. We have Orchestra Seating in the block closest to the stage. The Poncho seats looks way to close for Blue Man-- we would end up missing the big picture. It looks like the online registration allows for kind-of seeing where your seats might be before you buy them. It looks like we will be near the front and center of Orchestra seats-- advantage to getting seats early.

We will have a car the full week, so if we go, we will have room to bring 2 more in your group if they don't have a car, assuming we go on the same day.

I also have a minivan scheduled for rental again on Thursday for the TBBQ-- Hopefully I'll get one as nice as last time, which doesn't beep when overloaded. :-)

Thursday is booked up for me. In the morning I pickup the van, then I have a small group that I will be taking to the .......... shop around 9:30am or 10am so I can be back in time for the TBBQ food roundup, which I'm guessing will to start at around 11:00am, noon, or 1:00pm. Then I'll likely be on-site at the TBBQ until late in the eve. (I'll only be doing one trip to the TBBQ this year, unlike last year with 2 trips there and 2 trips back.)

So Wed might work with us, but I'll have to check with my buddy.

BTW, GM1's Sushiscon was on Wed night last year, and Hackajar's Vegas 2.0 Summit has been on Thursday nights as well as QC (if I recall correctly-- though this may have moved to Friday night.)

I'd be in for some archery if someone from around the area knows of a good range and other people were up for it too (My shot sucks, but I love it anyway). I have no idea what my time-scale is because I haven't started the summer job yet, but I do have all of that Friday off for sure, so I'll probably be flying in Thursday afternoon/evening...I should work on getting Monday off too.

Re: Stuff you are planning to do in Vegas before or after DC15...

not sure when we will hit vegas as ive decided to rent a large black suv to cruise around LA before wandering slowly towards vegas annoying locals as we go. Seemed like the best plan to slowly reintroduce alcohol back into my system before the fun starts.

Once in vegas I suspect that shooting will definately be on the agenda. i hear one of those afore-mentione destablishments has had a complete overhaul. Im glad becuase last time we went some of their toys were in a bad enough state to jam.

not sure if that will happen pre or post con though.

P&T sounds like a good plan. Problem is in the decade or so (wow that makes me feel old.) that ive been visiting vegas ive never managed to visit a show. Something always comes up. either pre-con hassle, during con madness or post con cleanup always gets in the way.

The place I am thinking of is likely the same place Deviant is thinking of, and is a place with a range, rangemasters and opportunity to rent automatic weapons.

It is not big enough for the size of crowds that attended DC Shoots.

Something that won't be ready this year, but is supposedly going to break ground at the end of this year is:
                    http://www.co.clark.nv.us/parks/Shooting_Park.htm

Here is a rough location of the park by google maps showing what I think is N. Decator Blvd (far right, North to south) and Moccasin Road (bottom, east to west) as seen in this image from the page above:
                    http://www.co.clark.nv.us/parks/Shoo...SitePlan07.jpg

(If you look here then you can look mostly south from that location and find Las Vegas.)

They plan to break ground in October of the year and be open for business Early Summer 2008.

The original plan was to include space for archery, and firearms. I don't know all of the details, and plans do change from bulletin to bulletin.

IIRC, on maps, you can find it North West of where we are, and would probably be a 30 minute to 1 hour drive from our present hotel.

if anyone used to watch The West Wing you would have seen at least one of the segments of their routine... a scene in the very beginning of Season 6, Episode 8 entitled "In The Room" features Penn and Teller performing at the birthday party of the President's youngest daughter. In a wonderful display of flagrant disregard for the political fallout, they use the opportunity of having the White House as a venue to make a point about freedom of speech. I tossed a video clip [9MB XviD] of it online if people want to know more (i'm joining TheCotMan with respect to not going into detail right here)

I hate that I will miss SushiCon this year. I am not arriving until about noon on Thursday. Did not want to miss out on the Toxic Bar-b-que and Deviant's exotic meat selections!

So, unless it is planned for 1 PM or later Thursday I guess I'll have to pass.

I should be in Monday or Tuesday for Blackhat, I'd like to do some sun worshipping, before or after Defcon, and not to completely thread-jack this, any plans for the Monday after Defcon to decompress before flying back?

Don't let their crappy and LOUD website turn you off to American Shooters, its got my vote for Class III fun in Las Vegas. I have been disappointed too many times before at The Gun Store to ever grace that place again with my pocketbook.
