i agree with hackajar 100%... or maybe my position is even more extreme, since i can't imagine that one should reasonably expect DefCon to be an environment that is super-sensitive to anyone's personal expectations of intellectual property or copyright.

i know that i don't give a damn about those matters when i'm at a public venue listening to a speech or a performance, many of which i record. if folks don't want something that they've created to be disseminated and spread they can simply keep it in a vault in their basement. once it's out, it's out... hardly worth whining at that point.

I would rather give up these "exclusive" songs in turn for the ability to record. IMHO people care more about personal freedom to record over DJ's freedom to play songs they don't want recorded.

If a big room on the ground floor is taken over, you could actually have DJs playing all day/night. Having projectors with visuals would be pretty rad as well.

I'll be in Vegas for DC this year and would be glad to throw down some hard hitting industrial-techno (hard techno, powernoise, industrial) once again..

I'd also be glad to collaborate on a surround sound audio system w/ whoever would like to set one up.. I've started an audio hardware company working on a box to facilitate this kind of thing.. This kind of thing will work great for chill area, but be a little out of budget (for additional speakers) for B&W.

A picture of a recent temporary installation w/ a view of our prototype box in some picts I did out here in SF:

Are there going to be sky box parties this year, some people were giving me the impression that that was unlikely this year.

    3. we can invite other DJs to spin chill out at a background volume during the day.
    4. right next to the smoking area (for those of you who have not been informed, Las Vegas passed the no smoking law for all public areas, minus casino floors and bars with no food.)
    5. we won't have to clear or shut down the room for set-up. not like we're gonna interfere with any of the talks, so our set up schedule will be pretty relaxed. we'll enjoy that.
    6. daytime use of the stage to announce contests, speaker changes, special events, etc...

thats what i think. like i said before, we're up for anything, but i think this space would be prime for us.
There are some things that would need to be worked out with this:
aCTF has used this space 2 years in a row, and spent a *lot* of time running cables tables, and taping the cat5* to the carpet to avoid people tripping over the network. The setups were both long and tedious, and were not things that could quickly, or easily be picked up and re-laid-out every morning.
aCTF was playing music in the contest space last year. It would be good to have everyone on the same page for music generation so there are not multiple sources in the same room, and to ensure saving people the transport space of the heavy equipment needed to have the amplified music if they know they won't need to bring their own equipment.

The Defcon Robots contest had a rig which stayed up between contest days, and moving the rig from last year each night could have lead some to complain if they sensed any functional difference between the runs on different days. Their rig will be different this year. I don't know if it will lend itself to tear-down and reset, or move.

LPCon has many locks, which can be heavy and bulky, requiring much effort to tear down and setup each night. (This may have been done last year, and maybe they will do this next year and store the locks in the LP Village overnight-- I've not heard what they will be doing with their items.)

Most other contest can be fairly easily moved as complete tables, based on what I saw last year. (Pick up the table with their stuff on it and move it to a new location, and the contest has been moved.)

I heard Russ is still in charge of the contest area, so you might want to run this idea by him and see if he sees other problems, or logistical issues that could make this location difficult to use, based on the planning for this area that he has in the works.
(It is much easier to have solutions to foreseeable problems before they are encountered than when they are encountered.)

    Good luck! :-)

Friday is easy,30 to 45 minutes tops to get ready. we will just need time for the banquet staff to pull chairs and set some tables.

as always, you know myself and Zziks are always up for a good challenge.

Wow....the top of the Riv was a good venue in theory for sure, awesome place, and glad I got to play there...

Ideally if money wasn't an issue, I'd just ask if you wanted to rent out RA or ICE.

*tries to think of a Riv venue* All I can think of is the floor at the bottom of the skyboxes, but that would be loud and bother the skyboxen and echoy...

I fully agree with the criteria of finding a new space.

    Ideas, guys?

i can't imagine a huge number of people would avail themselves of the board patch. if people were restricted to using small devices (i.e.- MP3 player/recorders, DAT devices, minidisc units, etc) i don't think it would be a huge burden on the DJ staff, would it?

i mean, you hand up a device with the record function running. all the booth staff would do is plug it in to a jack with properly-normalized volume (really, just line-level inputs) and let it roll. at the end of the night, the four or five people who were jacked in can claim their stuff. ask them to mark their devices with colored tape or some other sort of flag if need be.
