Re: Virtual server hosting
Apparently I'm a bit late to the game on this topic, but I figured I'd throw it out there. I'm quite happy and content with my provider "Hostrocket.com". I've been using them for the better part of six years and have had nothing but excellent service.
They also have a very active user based community: http://forums.hostrocket.com/ , and don't censor for negative comments.
They have a good backbone [OC48]. Definitely worth a look, if you're in their market. Feel free to hit me up on IRC if you want to know anything about them (as I have PM's disabled here).
Also of not if you're looking for a dedicated server specifically then I would look into: http://www.layeredtech.com/ . Converge, you may enjoy it for their plethora of OS's: http://www.layeredtech.com/dedicated...pen-source.php

Sounds like they fully qualify to be listed on Chris's site

Re: Virtual server hosting
Hostpapa terminated.
I received an email back today from Hostpapa support confirming that by uploading my site content to their server .. you know, to actually host my websites on the service I just paid for? .. I have violated their terms of service (which by the copy of ToS that I've looked over multiple times.. is just completely false). .. Good thing the electric company doesn't operate like that.
Here is what I believe it really comes down to.. false advertisement. Other hosts may be better than Hostpapa, but I doubt it. The power hosters claim 300GB of space with 3TB of transfer and crazy stats to lure signups into year contracts. For folks that underutilize their service and provide a huge profit margin they keep them locked in contract. For folks that will actually make use of their service as advertised they claim ToS violation or whatnot, since it is likely cheaper to fully refund the amount of the hosting for that one customer than to actually hold true to the service that they agreed to provide at signup. By uploading 13GB of my site content, it flagged them that I would likely use the service I was paying for and that I needed to be removed.
WELL SUCCESS! I look forward to the FULL REFUND that they have agreed to provide and will continue my search for a decent hosting company.
Fuck hostpapa.. I nominate them, in addition to Hostmonster, Bluehost, and other power hosters in this category, for fucktardhalloffame awards.
On the other front, Arvixe continues to rock and rock hard. Maybe I'll just toss more money their way.

Re: Virtual server hosting
Strike 1 for Hostpapa.
Last week I uploaded the bulk of my site content outside of public view in a directory called 'migrate'. My intention was burst the transfer of data over, then slowly move things into public site by site. Then I went away for a long weekend ..
At noon on Friday I received an email nastygram from them indicating that I had 13GB (~4% of the service they agreed to) of data on their server, but only a splash page, claiming that I was violating terms of service by uploading personal and backup data unrelated to my hosting.. hmmmph.
The next email was sent Saturday shortly after 9am (21 hours later).. complaining that I hadn't responded within 24 hours and threatening account suspension. Nice. .. interesting math they use up there in Canada. What's worse is that the account became suspended per notification on Sunday around 4pm... still well outside of any business week for an incorrect allegation of a violation that is generally not requisite of a 24 hour shutdown. I returned today at approximately 2pm to discover this.
Oh.. and I haven't received any phonecalls from them, although now that everything is ENTIRELY DOWN, they claim they'll call .. well.. its been 24 hours... no call from them. I have submitted my shitkicking response accordingly and will continue to update.
--Update: Well beyond 24 hours since contacting them and 48 hours since they turned my service down. Nothing. No calls, no emails... I just sent a nicely written unpleasant mail.Last edited by converge; June 19, 2007, 01:45.

Audit was kind enough to step up and offer his services. I do admit that it is much nicer to have a host whom you can yell at without any feeling of guilt :) That and I'd rather give money to a friend than to strangers in Utah.
On another note; I've been playing around with snort/mysql/base and it really opened my eyes to how much crap was flying at me on a day to day basis.
I've been bitten by a monitoring bug. Any suggestions for system monitoring programs or host monitoring that I should play with? Preferably free/open source?
