I was thinking back to the good old days of 300 baud modems, Pine, MUD's, ASCII art and the BBS. For the adults :) who remember this, what was your favorite BBS. I know I'm dating myself but what the heck. I was always partial to Galacticomm. Also what was the first computer you worked on; Data General Nova 3, Apple 6502, and a Unix Variant called Idris which was actually pretty cool for its day.

I liked Searchlight, though it seemed all the warez places used PCBoard and all the message-centric places used Renegade.

Everyone remember their M77. Man I just found an old book called "Computer Applications of Numberical Methods" Newton-Raphson Method anyone :) Yes, life was uncomplicated back then, no GUI's just you, a blinking cursor, and a blank command line..

I'm dating myself a bit but I would say I had the most exposure to Citadel, Wildcat and Renegade. First PC was a Ti99a, like a lot of folks, I imagine. A C64, then various PCs, a PCjr, an XT, a Tandy 1000. Didn't get to poke around on any big iron until college.

I've said a number of times I had more fun with the old hardware organizing OwnTheBox than anything else. Everyone else seems more interested in a solo CTF sort of thing but I'm thinking the "oldest device that can talk IP" contest next year would be more fun for me, anyway...

There was a thread earlier about CommVex and the Classic Gaming Expo the week prior to DC15 in Vegas, still wish I'd been able to go.

I ran a WWIV BBS called "Mindscape Illusions" back in the late 80's/early 90s when I was barely a teenager. Oh, the fun of watching ASCII art scroll by at 1200 or 2400 baud. You can telnet into some BBS's these days, but it just isn't the same.

When I started college in 1994, Lynx was fairly widespread, but Mosaic (and later Netscape) hadn't quite caught on yet. Of course you can still get some miminal functionality from lynx, but it just isn't the same.

The TI-99/4A rocked my world back then. I taught myself basic on that thing.

I also spent mass amounts of time on the C64 and my friends Apple IIc. I didn't get my greasy paws on anything else outside of school until someone gave me a Mac II & IIcx in 1995.

I think I still have print outs of ASCII art in a box in my mom's attic - all done on a dot matrix printer....

WWIV, bitches. I was always partial to Telegard and Renegade as well. I ran a WWIV BBS called The CCCP back in 1986. I was co-sysop on Digital Decay for many years till it went down (incidently, it only went down about 2 years ago. Outside of Ripco it was the longest running HPVC BBS in the US).

First computers were a VIC-20 and the old TI

Right on. Telegard and Renegade were both based on WWIV source, so it makes sense.

Telnet BBS list, if you have the itch.

                  And another (Atari 8-bit).

                  And yet one more.

I'm not one for reminiscing, but I have to give a shout out to Tasty Petunia Vomit. There was one section of the registration process:

                    "Are you Gerald Ford?"

                    "Do you know Gerald Ford?"

"Do you have Gerald Ford's wallet?"

I'm not sure what the obsession was all about, but it certainly set the mood for the board.

Oh, and I assume you purchased Jason Scott's excellent BBS Documentary?

I remember using a lot of BBSes, but the only one that really sticks in my head was the Dragon's Lair BBS in Dublin. I believe it was a Fidonet node at one point, but might be confusing it with another one.

First computer: Magnavox Odyssey 2; still have it in its original box. Went through a ton of Ataris after that (8-bit and ST), then on to PCs.

                        Re: Bbs

Fido net ruled in my opinion. I ran a private BBS for about six folks out of my house on the family phone line so it was only up when I could get the kids to bed and off the phone.

I was stationed in Hawaii when I bought my first personal computer was an Atari 500 with the tape cassette. I managed to sell this to someone and by adding $50.00 purchased a C64. This gave way to a Commodore PC which was heavily modded. the Commodore PC was the first to be hooked to a modem - I still remember paying $129.95 mail order for my first 1200bps modem.

However, the first computer I touched, other than the DSTE and IBM-360/20 at work, was a Heathkit that two of us put together and went out on a two day bender in Japan when we managed to get it interfaced to a model 28 teletypewriter.

If I remember right, Renegade was based off the Telegard 2.7 source after Eric Pollard stopped development.

Anyhow, I was definitely a Telegard guy. Ran my first BBS (Chemical Warfare in 312) on TG2.5i...

It takes me back to see Ripco mentioned. I was pretty active there, and remember crapping my pants when they were busted. I was like 13 at the time and thought for sure my door was going to kicked in, and my parents would be PISSED. I ended up having my first internet account through Ripco a little later on.

In lots of ways, I miss the BBS days. There were these little communities tied together largely by area code. So much more of a community that most modern internet-era communiciations.

I'm suprised no one mentioned Celerity! I remember that being a fairly popular package among boards that would probably have been popular with many here...
