I've decided that the Short story contest will return this year, but it will be my last year of running it. If this contest will continue, I want to turn it over to a new leader, perhaps one of this years volunteer judges will be interested. I don't want to just Kill it by quitting, I want to see it grow into a bigger and better thing every year and I have a lot of other DEF CON responsibility that prevent me from investing in making this "cooler".
If you are interested in judging for the contest please contact me at nikita at defcon dot org.
New for this year, we will be putting ALL of the short story entries on the Conference DVD and we will be listing the winners in the Conference program in a short blurb, letting everyone know they can check the forums and dvd to read more.
Also possibly new for this year is the DEF CON Forum meet proposed a short story reading and a sort of meet the author event, that's a real possibility in the works. As time goes on and we get closer to the show, other events may tie into the short story contest, that has yet to be determined, but I am hopeful.
As for now, here is what you need to know.
The contest is now open and will close June 1st, 2012.
People choice poll will be opened and it will close June 10th, at that time all winners will be announced.
Please submit to nikita at defcon dot org.
Please submit ONLY in a .txt file.
Please keep your short stories, an actual SHORT story. Leave the manuscripts and 404 page novels to your publisher and agents.
Please keep your stories in tune with our community, we want stories about hackers, hacking, science, technology, nerdy things, geeky things, zombie things. And here is the catch: We want you to tie your stories in with the DEF CON Conference itself. So if you write about zombies chasing a group of young folk, they better be at our con, staving off a hoard of the undead while building a lab to find a cure for the T Virus.
Am I being unreasonable in this requirement....maybe. Don't care. I'd like to read stories about DEF CON 1 to DEF CON 19, names changed to protect the guilty of course :) . You could write about that time at DC 9 at the AP, where you and your buddies took it upon yourself to inflict havoc and mayhem by....or maybe you want to pretend you were there and write about it. Fine by me, write it up! Now's your chance Mr. Thompson.
Please...no hair tussling in the breeze bodice ripping stories you can find for .25 cents in the romance bin, no matter how you dress it up with tech, it's not worth it to me read nerd porn unless it's a tiger direct or fry's circular.
What do you get if you win?
First place winner will receive two human badges.
Second place winner will receive one human badge.
Peoples choice winner ( voted by the community) will receive one human badge.
Everyone will get their story on the DVD, and the winners will be announced in the program.
I've been asked if this is an award ceremony worthy contest, In my opinion no. The award ceremony is TOO DAMN LONG and Since this happens BEFORE DEF CON, this will not be mentioned at the awards ceremony, and the winners will instead get recognition in the printed program.
Tips for winning:
Spell check.
Follow the rules as mentioned above.
Write a good story.
DON'T Send me PM's on the forum, I seriously hate that, just email me.
You can follow me on twitter at Niki7a if you want to, If this seems an exciting method of communication then maybe I will make a short story contest twitter account...do people want that?
