I'm looking to see Blue Man Group, and go to a shooting range.
I may go see Penn and Teller too.
Visiting different buffets is also on my list.

The Atomic (bomb) Museum sounds cool too.

How about the rest of you? Have plans to do stuff before or after con, other than con-related things?

I'm looking to see Blue Man Group, and go to a shooting range. I may go see Penn and Teller too.all three of those are on my list, actually. i heard that if you go rather early to the P&T show at the Rio you can sometimes get into the house before they begin officially and Penn will tend to be just chilling onstage, jamming a bit with his bass etc. You can hang out with P&T and just rap with them about anything, or have them sign/defile any religious liturgy that you present to them for an autograph.

as for shooting, for many years now we've been organizing get-togethers are one of vegas' two well-known ranges that rent Class-III weapons. maybe we can coordinate a time to get a group again this year. (no offense to anyone, but chances are that such a group -- at least, any group of which i'm an organizing element -- will consist almost exclusively of people i've met in person, not just on the forums, for whom i can solidly vouch for non-asshat status. i just don't need to be anywhere near a firing line with someone holding an AK in full rock-and-roll mode unless i've gotten to know them first)

i'm in town wednesday, how 'bout you?

I don't get into town until Thursday morning, but if you're planning on going to the range anytime after that, I'm in. Having already been on the wrong end of someone's AK-47, I hope to qualify for non-asshat status:wink:

I hear Thorn is trying to visit the latest taping of his favorite show, CSI...

I'll be in about my usual time, 2PM on Thursday. I'd be interested in any Thursday PM activities.

I intend to take time to see the Fremont Street Experience downtown. I plan on taking the bus downtown one evening.

Please post info if the shooting range idea comes together. I was in attendance at the Defcon shoots in past years and would be interested if some one can find another place to hold this.

When I went to see P&T 2 or 3 years ago, they invited people up on stage to examine and inspect the elements of their magic tricks to see what they could find. I went up for that and looked at them and played with them. They had a really good show on, of all things, politics and freedom of speech doing some things that might be controversial, but likely in-line with many of the thoughts of people on these forums. (No more details that than-- sorry.)

I am arriving Monday with a buddy of mine from Europe. He is more into firearms than me, so I would have to check with him on the schedule, but I'm guessing that he would be fine with this. (I'll vouch for this guy. I've known him for over 8 years, and the restrictions in many European countries for Gun ownership require being responsible and members of Gun Clubs with lots of experience on ranges before advancing to higher caliber weapons.) If you would prefer not to include him, I totally understand, and we can go on our own. If you are going to the same range as us, check the web, as they have had coupons for like $5, $10, or $15 off when you pay more than $100. [I just checked. it looks like $5 off the rental of machine guns.]

I've got my Blue Man group tickets now. We have Orchestra Seating in the block closest to the stage. The Poncho seats looks way to close for Blue Man-- we would end up missing the big picture. It looks like the online registration allows for kind-of seeing where your seats might be before you buy them. It looks like we will be near the front and center of Orchestra seats-- advantage to getting seats early.

We will have a car the full week, so if we go, we will have room to bring 2 more in your group if they don't have a car, assuming we go on the same day.

I also have a minivan scheduled for rental again on Thursday for the TBBQ-- Hopefully I'll get one as nice as last time, which doesn't beep when overloaded. :-)

Thursday is booked up for me. In the morning I pickup the van, then I have a small group that I will be taking to the .......... shop around 9:30am or 10am so I can be back in time for the TBBQ food roundup, which I'm guessing will to start at around 11:00am, noon, or 1:00pm. Then I'll likely be on-site at the TBBQ until late in the eve. (I'll only be doing one trip to the TBBQ this year, unlike last year with 2 trips there and 2 trips back.)

So Wed might work with us, but I'll have to check with my buddy.

BTW, GM1's Sushiscon was on Wed night last year, and Hackajar's Vegas 2.0 Summit has been on Thursday nights as well as QC (if I recall correctly-- though this may have moved to Friday night.)

I'd be in for some archery if someone from around the area knows of a good range and other people were up for it too (My shot sucks, but I love it anyway). I have no idea what my time-scale is because I haven't started the summer job yet, but I do have all of that Friday off for sure, so I'll probably be flying in Thursday afternoon/evening...I should work on getting Monday off too.

not sure when we will hit vegas as ive decided to rent a large black suv to cruise around LA before wandering slowly towards vegas annoying locals as we go. Seemed like the best plan to slowly reintroduce alcohol back into my system before the fun starts.

Once in vegas I suspect that shooting will definately be on the agenda. i hear one of those afore-mentione destablishments has had a complete overhaul. Im glad becuase last time we went some of their toys were in a bad enough state to jam.

not sure if that will happen pre or post con though.

P&T sounds like a good plan. Problem is in the decade or so (wow that makes me feel old.) that ive been visiting vegas ive never managed to visit a show. Something always comes up. either pre-con hassle, during con madness or post con cleanup always gets in the way.

The place I am thinking of is likely the same place Deviant is thinking of, and is a place with a range, rangemasters and opportunity to rent automatic weapons.

It is not big enough for the size of crowds that attended DC Shoots.

Something that won't be ready this year, but is supposedly going to break ground at the end of this year is:
http://www.co.clark.nv.us/parks/Shooting_Park.htm

Here is a rough location of the park by google maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.863178,66.884766&ie=UTF8&cd=1&ll=36.362693,-115.239716&spn=0.073265,0.130634&t=h&z=13&om=1) showing what I think is N. Decator Blvd (far right, North to south) and Moccasin Road (bottom, east to west) as seen in this image from the page above:
http://www.co.clark.nv.us/parks/ShootingPark/SitePlan07.jpg

(If you look here (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&q=&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=36.863178,66.884766&ie=UTF8&cd=1&ll=36.362693,-115.239716&spn=0.073265,0.130634&t=h&z=13&om=1) then you can look mostly south from that location and find Las Vegas.)

They plan to break ground in October of the year and be open for business Early Summer 2008.

The original plan was to include space for archery, and firearms. I don't know all of the details, and plans do change from bulletin to bulletin.

IIRC, on maps, you can find it North West of where we are, and would probably be a 30 minute to 1 hour drive from our present hotel.

They had a really good show on, of all things, politics and freedom of speech doing some things that might be controversial, but likely in-line with many of the thoughts of people on these forums. (No more details that than-- sorry.)if anyone used to watch The West Wing (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0200276) you would have seen at least one of the segments of their routine... a scene in the very beginning of Season 6, Episode 8 entitled "In The Room" features Penn and Teller performing at the birthday party of the President's youngest daughter. In a wonderful display of flagrant disregard for the political fallout, they use the opportunity of having the White House as a venue to make a point about freedom of speech. I tossed a video clip (http://deviating.net/stuff/Penn_and_Teller_flag_trick.avi) [9MB XviD] of it online if people want to know more (i'm joining TheCotMan with respect to not going into detail right here)

I should be in Monday or Tuesday for Blackhat, I'd like to do some sun worshipping, before or after Defcon, and not to completely thread-jack this, any plans for the Monday after Defcon to decompress before flying back?

Don't let their crappy and LOUD website turn you off to American Shooters (http://www.americanshooters.com/), its got my vote for Class III fun in Las Vegas. I have been disappointed too many times before at The Gun Store (http://www.thegunstorelasvegas.com/) to ever grace that place again with my pocketbook.

american shooters is the place i was refering to. They have apparently overhauled all their class III weapon stock and replaced some of the more knackered toys.

About time becuase its been getting steadily worse there.

Postcon i will definately be hanging around for a while. We are booked to fly out of SFO the following weekend so we have a week to decompress in vegas, drive slowly to SFO and then maybe some warmdown partying in SFO.

The places exist, though you have to be a bit more carefull as civilisation is always getting closer.

The problem is every year the retard levels grew higher and higher. It got to the point where the retards were preventing the organisers from having a good time and at that point there is no point.

Maybe time for a new shoot to spring from the ashes, but someone would need to set the "you must be this tall to ride" filter sufficiently high so as to reject all the retards.

American Shooters is great if you want to "Shoot a machine-gun!" though, I'd hate to be the occupant in the condo's directly behind it now! It's a little hard to get to right now (and even during con) due to mass construction on that road currently.

We found a really great spot just outside of North Las Vegas that's away from people, and has some good shade. Drop me a line if you want the secret coordanates.

Talking of the Attik does anyone recommend any other nightclubs in Vegas that are worth a visit.

Clubs with large ammounts of gothic ladies would be a plus. However any nightclubs that don't catch fire after I visit them would be even better.

Well I get in on Tuesday, no idea what Im doing that day.. probably just chill out, maybe see a show or something.. Buy tickets from one of those half price vendors and just take luck of the draw.. Whatever they have available.

No idea Wed Either.. If sushicon is Wed, I'll probably attend that.. I had to choose between trying this grill I had heard about or JPop at Mandalay for sushi this last trip.

Thursday I dont know if Im going to be needed pre-bbq for any of the events yet, unless someone says something I'm going to leave the pre-bbq events to the pre-bbq event organizers. I'll be at the BBQ that night, then the summit after the BBQ.

You say know your way around the gun? Unfortunatly us Brits only have access to shotguns and bolt-action rifles (Of which I have fired and owned). Not that I'm a fucktard and would find it impossible to load and arm a firearm I have not used but I assume you get some sort of basic instruction?

Also under Nevada law what do I need to produce to rent a firearm? Will a passport do?

I still haven't heard from them on group rates, but most places you need 6 or more from what I have been able to dig up. Right now, I think we have 5 people interested including myself so...

My flight arrives at 1:45pm LV time. I need to check the available jump times, may have to head from there to the jump and then check in. haha.

Can we get a new thread started maybe in the Contests & Events section for the jump?

I'm pretty excited about this now, I've never jumped before! Maybe 'Defcon from above' as a slogan.. (play on 'death from above'). Here's something that could be incorporated to the shirt
http://www.psywarrior.com/Deathfromabove.jpg

Also, what happens if we have more than 6 people jumping? Will everyone get a discount if they have to split up the group? I may be able to convince a friend to jump as well.

I'll add a subforum for this event if you can get it mentioned on the Defcon 15 list of contests or event pages:
http://www.defcon.org/html/defcon-15/dc-15-events.html
http://www.defcon.org/html/defcon-15/dc-15-events.html

Other than that, you can start a new thread:
http://forum.defcon.org/forumdisplay.php?f=95 (here)
Then if it is ever listed on the main dc15 page, the threads can be moved into a forum for this event/contest.

Additionally, I can prune this part of the discussion t a new thread in the official/unofficial contests not listed above. section of the contests/event page.

Let me know.

Hmm, that looks a bit advanced and very private.
This thread from last year, stated it never happened at dc13 and there were questions if it would go on for dc14.
http://forum.defcon.org/showpost.php?p=79689&postcount=12

My defcon 13 book did have it listed, defcon 14 It doesn't look as if it was added
After a quick search, I found several mentions of it being an unofficial event. a lot of other threads looked like it was for indoor skydiving.
none of them looked to repeat after that year.

It would be good to know if it is already an event still, if not then maybe time to start a new one as a new group and continue to assemble whoever wants to do it this year and work it out from there.

I wouldn't think of it as private. Vann Harl's a funny one, but don't let his oddness put you off.

I know absolutely nothing about what happened, specifically, other than that I know Vann Harl (the organizer, and also probably owner of the dcjump site). I had thought it was outdoor jumping, but perhaps not. At any rate, not everyone is on the Forums (I am only because it's easier to run a contest if at least one person monitors the forums).

It would be good to know if it is already an event still, if not then maybe time to start a new one as a new group and continue to assemble whoever wants to do it this year and work it out from there.

I'd suggest sending him an email. Maybe he'd be happy to change the site to announce it for you, maybe he'd want to go too. Here's his email:

No word from them yet. I guess it doesnt really matter anyway. The only problem I see at this point is going to be scheduling, but most have said jumping the first day before Toxic BBQ is the way to go. Only problem with that is my damn flight doesnt arrive until 1:45pm LV time. I will have to see what times are available to jump. We can also look into a few other jump companies too I guess.

Either way, I want to try and nail something down in the next two weeks so everyone knows what the deal is.

3 Warp Core Breech? Could anyone keep down that much alcohol? If not, then I think I know of what the "Revisited" part of the title refers.

As for, "Quark's," I think you'd have to check with OP. She is around from time to time.

The revisited would reference the Quark's time from a few years ago. After consuming multiple Warp Cores, a dozen of us went through the Star Trek ride (http://23b.org/gallery/DC12_spahkle/DSCN0261). A once in a lifetime experience that is worth trying to reproduce.

Dude, you've got it all wrong. It was "If it's not larger than your head, it's not worth drinking."

As for Quark's, I should be around on our same BatTime for our same BatChannel, but I don't know yet what the new gig has in store for me. So with this in mind, I'm sad to say I can't really do much but show up (if and when they let me off my leash).

LVSD got back with me this AM. Below is what they said for anyone interested in jumping:

Thank you for contacting us. We apologize for the slight delay in responding. It seems our spam filter got a little of control. Anyway, we do offer group rates. For you group of 4-5 we can offer an additional $10 off our currently discounted rates (already $50 off) plus additional video package discounts if your group is interested in those. The discounts could total up to an additional $40 off per person. Also, we're now doing the 3 Mile Skydive 7 days a week for the same price as the 2 Mile Skydive because of our large turbine engine airplane (Caravan) that can take you all the way up to 15,000' and can carry up to 7 tandem jumpers at a time!! We're the only skydiving center in Nevada that can do that!! We recommend that you book sooner rather than later to ensure you reserve the day and time you want and the morning time is the best. You can book over the phone or online by going back to our website at www.skydivelasvegas.com and clicking on the "Reservations" link. Let us know if you have any other questions. We're looking forward to hearing from you.

There are others in the area too, but they all seem to be good so....

Talking of the Attik does anyone recommend any other nightclubs in Vegas that are worth a visit.

Clubs with large ammounts of gothic ladies would be a plus. However any nightclubs that don't catch fire after I visit them would be even better.

Attik is okish, depending on who is DJ/spining. The attendance is sparce with it being a Monday night, and most in the scene are service industry folk. Keep reading for more...

Krave (http://www.kravelasvegas.com/event9.htm) (the only major on-strip gay/alternative club) has a goth night on fridays, but you'll probably be too busy with con stuff that night, unless you can convince a group to go. I've never been myself, maybe hackajar or someone else knows what's up with the scene there.

You can skip the so called 'goth' night - the venue & such has taken a serious downturn in the last year. Good luck finding those goth gals, the real ones are hard to find in Vegas - the ones you do come across are the goth-in-a-box types. For the most part, Vegas attracts a certain genre of people – this is not one of them. We do not have the scenes like Seattle, DC, or Denver – different sort of town, people, and expectations. If you want, track me down at DEFCON and I can fill you in on the details – not something I can really post here.

Full disclosure: I used to be involved with the Friday night event at Krave. Due to unprofessionalism of the others involved, and my work putting me on the night shift I am no longer involved. Thankfully.

That is an interesting development - all the previous shows I have seen listed when tickets went on sale sold out in under 15 minutes; then went crazy with the scalpers & the ebayers. With the last (and first) time I went to a show there at the Pearl, casino security were coming down heard on people who were selling tickets - not even scalping, but folks that had an extra they were trying to get rid of. Perhaps the scalpers have gotten word that this is not a venue to work with, and hence the availability of tickets?

(SARCASM)
Naa, it is just because Godsmack sucks!

There is no way in hell I would use ticketmasterbator ever again; even if they were the only folks that had tickets available.

I'd love to see Penn and Teller, but the prices for shows in Las Vegas are so expensive. (To me, at least.)

So, I am hoping to snag some half-priced tickets sometime during Blackhat. I really want to see Las Vegas as a 'tourist' this year since I've gone for so many years and haven't really been able to get to see anything other than the hotel the conference is at.

I really want to see Las Vegas as a 'tourist' this yearheh, maybe i'm very different than the average breed of cat, but i was overwhelmingly unimpressed with vegas when i did the tourist thing. I think it was my second time out there, DC9, and a bunch of us went up and saw the strip, walked through some casinos, and ate a meal at some expensive joint. (it was a fake "bistro" type of affair inside this huge mall/walkway deal that was entirely indoors. don't get me wrong, it was neat and all... but after that one time seeing things there i was totally done with the strip and all that nonsense and have stuck almost exclusively to the con hotel every year since, except for sushi night and the bbq and the gun ranges)

i think i felt very similar to how Arthur and Fenchurch did in So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish when they looked out over the San Fernando Valley. I realize at the time they were in southern california and not las vegas, but the sentiment is the same...

Late in the evening they drove through the Hollywood hills along Mulholland Drive and stopped to look out first over the dazzling sea of floating light that is Los Angeles, and later stopped to look across the dazzling sea of floating light that is the San Fernando Valley. They agreed that the sense of dazzle stopped immediately at the back of their eyes and didn't touch any other part of them and came away strangely unsatisfied by the spectacle. As dramatic seas of light went, it was fine, but light is meant to illuminate something, and having driven through what this particularly dramatic sea of light was illuminating they didn't think much of it.

That is the key word: 'average'

The average sheeple or chalk player thinks it is great to roll into town, blow cash on stupid shit, pay crazy amounts on bottle service and door fees, and fancy assed eateries. Those of us that are above all of that need something a bit more to capture our interest & imagination (for the most part)

For the record, there are a handful of cool places on & near the strip - but just like anywhere else you go, they have to be hunder down. You have to go out and find those cool places, they are certainly not going to be in your face out there.

My suggestion: take 'how to ask a question' by ESR and apply it to being a tourist; or the n00b in the new town.

Favourite swimming pools?

I looked for a water park in vegas and it seems there is only one that shut down in 2004. I'm not terribly interested in going swimming, but enjoying tubes, waterfalls, waves, etc may be fun. Of course I don't even own a suit, so the pool would have to be permissive with pool clothing.

Wait, I know - you're going to suggest Caeser's "european" pool. Although I've considered it, it's a fuck of a lot of money for a pool. You'll have to tell me why it's cool other than "you see bewbs." I can do that at a bar, or at a defcon party.

So what's your favourite swimming pool, why, how much and who wants to find a water-park type place to hang out for a few hours?

Who knows even Astcell may l wanna join too... What do you say Astcell? it will be far more fun that diving in hostile waters... if I pull this up I will have ~25 seats. but I will need you to screen people.

Tropicana has an awesome pool area, one of the best in Vegas. If you stay days before or after the con and you're a pool person, switch hotels and go to the Trop or Flamingo (great pool area too). Both are pretty cheap on weekdays. Mandalay bay is also fantastic. I've never stayed at the MGM but it's also suppose to be good.

However for a really cheap stay and great pool area stay at the Trop. Garden rooms are dirt cheap (they are the original rooms from 50 years ago, and it shows).

Dead Addict just surprised me with tickets. We are 1st row, front and center! I guess he either bought them yesterday or today.

I'm thinking about catching the Vegas Mob Tour on Sunday. It starts at 9:30pm from the Greek Isles (close to the Riviera). and runs about 2.5 hours.

If anyone else is interested, let's get a group together.

As it turns out, I will be staying Sunday, and will be going to see Penn and Teller.

Once I got my tickets, I wondered where I was sitting. None of the places where I ordered tickets provided specific seat locations. The best they could do was say "amperstand" seating or not, and show a shaded space in the front left of center, center and right of center as one shade.

Turns out that there is a seating chart for the Rio on their own website (duh. I feel smart!):
http://www.pennandteller.com/03/seatingchart.html

When you check your tickets, I think you can find out where your seat is located:
Row: A,B,C,D... These refer to horizontal rows on that map.
Seat: If only 1, I think it may list just one number, if quantity is greater than one, you may have a range.
Section: 1&, 2&, 3& (front rows), or 1,2,3 (behind front rows), or 4, 5, 6 back.
It would be good for you to find out if you are front center (A6, Section 2&) or elsewhere.

If you are in my seat when I arrive, I will tell on you, and then you'll be sorry.

Where are you sitting? We are in 1 and 2 in the front row as far as I know.

I considered the Penn and Teller show, but would only go Monday night due to Sunday nights usually being my most enjoyable night of the con.

Well, that is the thing with the seating... just because you are in seat 1,2,3 doesn't mean you are in the center section (2), since each section, (1,2,3) has seats in their row that start with 1,2,3. A unique key would be a multi-partkey using Row+Seat#+Section. Using Row+Seat# would lead to collisions in the provided namespace.

I'd have to check my tickets again to know where I am sitting. I know it is near the front somewhere.

i may actually have an extra ticket for the sunday night P&T show. someone was going to come along with me but can't make it now. full disclosure: i will be also asking some of my close friends at defcon (the TOOOL people, etc) if they're interested... so any responses right now may be met with the sad news that the seat is already gone. in any case, feel free to shoot me a PM or find me at defcon to ask if it's still available if you like. these are second row, in the $100 section.

So what's your favourite swimming pool, why, how much and who wants to find a water-park type place to hang out for a few hours?

The Flamingo, hands down. 15 acres of pools, slides, tropical plants, exotic birds, etc. It's an oasis from the concrete jungle of Las Vegas. That's one of the main reasons that my wife and I are staying there this year.

Do the hotels/casinos keep it ridiculously cold such that it would warrant bringing a light jacket/long-sleeved shirt?

If you're the B-type hacker physique (i.e. 25+ lbs overweight) you'll be fine.
If you're the A-type hacker physique (i.e. skinny white boy) you might be cold.

If it's too cold, just go outside for ~45 seconds. You'll be good for another few hours inside.

Yes they do. Just remember that even if they keep it at 75 degrees, that might be 35 degrees cooler than outside. I suggest bringing one long sleeve shirt or a hat (since most heat loss happens at the top of your head).

Re: penn & Teller Show:

Ill be going to the Mon night show, Section 2, Row B, seat 5, smack dab in the middle. As I heard it, from 8-9 P&T do a Jazz show, then 9-10 the show, then 10-10:30~11 they do a meet and greet in the hall way leading out/in to the theater. If anyone else is around for that show that night, lemme know.

Saw "Stomp" Monday night, that was fun. Percussion and on-stage comedy.
Saw Blueman tonight. "Eh." I was not as impressed.

Monday, I went to American Shooters. This year, unlike The Gun Store, American Shooters gave us the weapons, the rounds, the clip (or magazine) and let us take them to the range, load them, and fire them without a rangemaster present. At the Gun Store, 2 or 3 years ago, they sharged us about $120 each, for 4 magazines and each automatic weapon. American shooters charged us $60 for rental of automatic weapon, 50 rounds of ammo (.45) or $50 for rental of automatic weapons and 50 rounds of ammo (9mm) plus a few extra bucks for rental of goggles, ear protection, and range access.

The Gun Store let us trade weapons without extra cost. Apparently, American Shooters charges each shooter, so trading weapons doubles cost. Depending on your use, American Shooters may save you money.

We go to the Gun Store tomorrow, and may go back to American Shooters because of our experience there compared to the gun store last time.

The Atomic Testing museum was great. Lots of video footage. Want a good laugh? Get to the copies of the "Certificates of Participation" on the various classified projects. About 1/3 of them made me smile or laugh out loud. :-) (It was like $12.75 each, maybe more or less.)

They do not allow flas photography in the museum, or cell phones with cameras, and have staff in the museum. If you read everything, and watch all of the videos, and use all of the computer simulation/games you shoudl expect to spend from 2 to 4 hours here.

Spam-A-Lot is now on my list, as well as P&T and of course Defcon and the TBBQ. :-)

Added:
Went to the 7-11 in Henderson that was re-done as a Kwik-E-Mart, but they were in the process of tearing it all down. Only thing left were a few color stripes on the gas station, some Squishie cups, donuts, 2 employees in the Kwik-E-Mart uniform, and one statue behind the counter.

The 7-11 on the strip between the Sahra and the Riv still has 6-packs of Buzz Cola, and some simpsons trading cards.
