I think DT said something about posting it on the Defcon website, or linking to it on the forums. So, I would imagine we'll get it soon.

I did at first but the lyric "I'm Joe Grand AKA Kingpin" made me think otherwise. I assumed it was something Joe did.

Kingpin was bummed he forgot to announce that the song was written based on his badge poem in the front of the printed program. Woops!

You can also grab it at http://www.osogato.com/hacks. Currently it's just got the mp3 and a link to the Brothers Grimm on Myspace, but this Saturday we'll be putting together a HOWTO for anyone who's interested in turning their own badge into a line-level meter.

Ah, I see the question has been answered. That's what I get for sleeping after DC!

The whole thing started when I read Kingpin's poem, and said "this has to be turned into a nerdcore song." I don't think I made it past page three of the program after reading it. (This was especially challenging since mlp and I showed up too late to get real badges, and wound up with paper badges. You don't want to know what i had to do to turn a paper badge into a human badge and an extra press badge, really)

I started a thread on the badge-hacking contest under the "contests" section of the forums. I'm hoping other people will post links to their code, etc. there.

http://forum.defcon.org/showthread.php?t=8769

We're planning on starting with an unmodified badge, and turn it into a line-level meter, taking photos of the procedure, in case anyone else wants to do the same, or even better, hack it out out further. (We had some really crazy ideas that were just too hard to get done in that amount of time without the ability to actually test our code until Sunday morning, when we figured out the problem with the Spyder kit. We had the iPod Shuffle cable control protocol mostly reverse-engineered, and were going to turn the badge into an iPod remote, but we were all too fried to finish that part by the end.)

DT: How about making this an official (Uber-badge-worthy) contest next year?

Well, it was in a way -- page 3 of the DC15 program has Kingpin's poem about the badges. I read that and thought "this needs to be a rap, and we should do an audio hack for the badge." I thought finding someone to turn that into a rap in less than two days would be the hard part, but it turns out it wasn't. (Tongen, one of the Kenshoto guys, knew Bolo (one half of the Brothers Grimm) from World of Warcraft. Go figure. I think at DEFCON, I'm three degrees from anyone I might ever need to know.)

The song turned out a lot better than I could have imagined -- the chorus (based on the end of the poem, but vastly improved), still slays me. We didn't even have to ask for any edits -- the first cut they gave us owned.

(I'm still looking for video of the closing ceremony as well. If you have it, post a link here!)

Go through the process, support it as a contents, submit it, and get it listed on the Defcon 16 page, and I or another admin will make a forum in the DC16 contest and events section.

I do not have a continuous video of closing ceremonies, but have multiple video files in 1-3 minute segments in not very good video/audio format. These have been encoded to use mp3 audio and xvid codecs. I am hoping to get time to post each video to the pics.defcon.org this weekend.

I also have better quality video of the end of the Titanium Chef where teams introduce their submissions. I plan to have Deviant Ollam review them. If he says they should be posted, either he can post them or I can.
Additionally, I have a video or two of Defcon Robots and will be having Kallahar look them over for publication.
I also have super-short video from Lost Mystery Box just before first boxes are handed out, and an even shorter segment from LPCon.

Lots of work this weekend.

I figure I'll wait and see if Joe actually plans to do hackable badges again next year. (I dropped him an email about it -- I'm hoping to get some extra badges to do the line-level hack on, so we can send a pair to the Brothers Grimm, who want to wear them at their next concert. I'll set them up with a mic so they can take the ambient bass and display that.)

But, assuming hackable badges, is there a forum entry with instructions for the contest process? I missed it when I scanned over the forum entries earlier, but I'm still sleep deprived from BH/DC. So, a pointer would be appreciated when you have time.

Process is fairly simple. Neil, Nikita, BlackBeetle, and/or Russ maybe Grifter too, will ask for information from people that want to run contests. One person will ask for information about the contest for placement on the web site, and another may ask for information to appear in the program, and another will ask for what kinds of resource/space you may need on the contests/events floor, or another one will need to hearyour request for a skybox. Many of these will appear on the main Defcon 16 site, or as threads in the forums.

Just because you are listed in the program, or on the web site does not mean you have the space, and just because you have space doesn't mean you are in the program, or on the main web page.

I would not expect to see any Defcon 16 content for at least 3 months. It is up to leader/organizers to submit their info and requests to everyone as needed.

Ah, okay. Well, I don't feel like it's my place to propose this "officially" as a contest. This is Kingpin's deal -- if he wants to actually run it as an official contest, then I suppose he will.

I was merely throwing in my encouragement to do so, given how much fun we had with the unofficial contest.

(I do wish that the official vs. unofficial contests were better marked, though. We actually thought the badge hacking contest was an official one this year, due to the prominent announcement about it on page 3 of the program.)

(As a side note, I got around to opening up our prize (the USB turntable) and was stoked to see that one of the projects presented at CodeCon (my con) was included on a CD in the box (the Audacity music editing program.)

Rock.

Check with Kingpin and see if he would like help with this, and making this a contest as well as getting the information into all of the people at the right time.

Starting a contest early, promoting your contest early, and being active in discussion either here or mailing lists or on your own forums all help to run popular contests.

Many people start the planning for the following year's contest within months of Defcon ending.

When I spoke to Lost(boy) several weeks before con, he had said that he was already thinking of new things to add to the contest NEXT year. Crap! Think of that... planning for next years Defcon even before this year's Defcon has started. :-)

Defcon Robots planning also started last year almost immediately after Defcon ended last year.

aCTF people were taking notes last year about things they could have done better. They learned early and revised their strategy, and continue to improve their contest, year after year.

Toxic BBQ Planners also began planning for the TBBQ 1 week after last year's con ended.

(Not going to name all contests or events.)

Planning, volunteering, organization, activism, participation, involvement, encouragement, and being ready with the information to submit to everyone as they need it are all very good ingredients to help make a successful contest or event.

See a need? Fill it or support those that are filling it. :-)

I still haven't come up for air from DEFCON yet and haven't even had a chance to thank Rabbi, Team Osogato, and The Brothers Grimm for a fucking awesome contest entry and killer song (the chorus is now my ring tone). It was a total honor to have an entry like this in the badge hacking contest, since it combined hardware, firmware, and egoware :) Once I recover a bit more and have a chance to sort out all the various entries and source that people have sent me, I'll put up a page on my site (www.grandideastudio.com) with pictures, schematics, etc. etc. There were some very nice firmware mods and a few games written, but I was surprised that there were no other hardware-related hacks, considering I got rid of ALL of the various hardware components I brought! Maybe people are working on something to show off next year :)

As for making the badge hacking an official contest, I can only hope! It really depends on how we plan on designing the badges in the future (e.g., hackable or not) and if I'm involved in the process. I still need to talk to DT about it, but we both need to decompress a bit first.

More later,

Joe

Yeah, I was moping around for 2 days wishing I could have mentioned that! Doh.

The Brothers Grimm did an awesome job and made a *killer* song all the while having to deal with my super cheesy poem lyrics. :)

Finally got a chance to write up some stuff about the DC15 badges. Stuck it on my site along with development info, some of my favorite pictures, and contest submission source code and videos.

I'll add more badge mods as people send them to me!

Kingpin:
I just added mp3 as an acceptable upload media type on pics.defcon.org.

How do you feel about having this song included on pics.defcon.org too?

You can upload it on your own, if you would like, since it is under the present size max.

Whoops. My mistake. Looks like layered security has bit me on my ass. mp3 appears to be blocked in yet another location. Wheee.

I've uploaded your mp3 to your pics account, and sent you a PM on how to publish it on pics.

Added to my to do list.

this appears to be it, but the same filter that blocked upload of mp3 might be blocked from download until DT gets back to update filter rules.

Update: I was able to play it and it worked for me. Please let me know if you have problems with getting the audio file from pics.
