Someone asked me, and I replied to them, but want to reply in public too, so nobody else asks me:

No, this is not spam. This is on-topic discussion and in my opinion, a good topic that would likely come to exist as a thread regardless of who brought it up. (I would have brought it up if I found out about it.)

Good luck with your show. I'm hoping they don't gloss over details the average viewer might not understand. Even an oversimplification with notation that stipulates there are exceptions to the simple model, which only exist to convey a basic concept is better than ignoring details, or getting them wrong, or providing a simple model without some sort of comment about the model being imperfect to explain how all of the factors are used to come to a conclusion, or show problems.

It is nice when shows take the time to not lie to the viewers-- even when they model a concept poorly, so long as they include a disclaimer that acknowledges their failure to totally address the whole problem.

Some people say, "adding disclaimers confuses people, it makes them ask questions, like, 'well, what is left out of this model? Where has it failed to address everything.'" Pfft. People asking questions in society is a good thing. Without questions, there is no science, no exploration, nothing new.

Here is a slogan I'm going to submit for the DC16 slogan contest:
"Hackers ask questions, why don't you?"

Good luck with this show. :-)

Answers the question; "Because I'm too busy watching TV". :)

Re: Tiger Team : Court TV on Dec 25th

Saw the first one, pretty good. However, I take issue with at a couple of items. The alarm company should have called the owners to let them know that there was an unscheduled disarm. A disarm after hours is never a good thing and I thought it was SOP for the alarm company to contact if that happened.. So whether it was TV or for real some one dropped the ball.

Another thing, not having a look out is a bad idea. You always need somebody on the outside watching if not more than some one. Or at least someone monitoring police channels on a scanner. Another reason to have someone on the outside is to provide a distraction for the first responders.

They also needed to jam the backup cellular modem for the alarm system which they didn't do; not to mention take out the siren, and the phone/data lines just to be sure.

Why picking locks is a more elegant solution is the extra time involved really necessary if you are going to take a car over the border. I know we have lock pick experts here that can do it quickly. A lock however is still a puzzle and sometimes puzzles can hang you up. Freon and a hammer might be quicker depending on the lock.

I don't see the necessity for the computer or the camera stuff either. Unless the cameras are monitored by a human being 24/7 as they should be, a mask would work just as well as mucking with the camera system. Though taking the camera system does hide your numbers.

Unless you plan to rearrange the show room what is the point of trying to remove the VIN number as these people will no doubt notice the big empty space in the show room the following morning. Going after the computer system to me would be an unnecessary risk and exposure though nonetheless cool.

Gloves would also be a very good idea. I hope the show gets better. Plus there is a general problem of these business exposing their weakness to the world.

                            Any comments?

I also wouldn't be surprised if some of these companies insurance carriers either dropped them, raised rates or made them totally redo their systems after airing.

One thing in physical security I always found laughable was people that get these great big metal doors with 2 locks and a padlock surrounding a room made of sheet rock; heeellllllooooo it's sheet rock. Or offices with the same setup with drop ceilings on both sides.

Don't mess with the stake in the ground go around it, I remember someone telling me at Defcon.:)
