  • Are Yahoo, GMail and others becoming dangerous?

I've seen some very impressive posts in here and hope I can get some help or at least an opinion or two on this. I've had problems using various browsers with Yahoo, GMail free e'mail and what seems to be new beta software run on these sites. With the exception of Internet Explorer these new beta pages won't load, force the browser open twice, time out, or crash using MOST other SAFER browsers. When I had these problems I Googled for help and found this:

    http://www.internetadvisor.net/index...id=947&catid=3

    http://www.internetadvisor.net/index...id=981&catid=3

This beta thing seems ongoing too when you Google "Yahoo or GMail beta crashes" or "Yahoo or GMail beta's suck".

What is going on here and why are these e'mail sites so friendly toward IE with all it's Java and Active X scripts that have a history of being so unsafe? I don't like using unsafe browsers even to read e'mail. Are there free e'mail sites other than Hotmail that I can use that don't have these problems when using safer browsers? Please help?

You seem like you got Google pretty well handled, I ran a search on safe free email and got a boatload of hits.

As always, your mileage may vary...

What you could do is just set your account for POP and use a mail client. The only problem is I believe Yahoo charges you to use pop...but it works on GMail.

Re: Are Yahoo, GMail and others becoming dangerous?

        Hi,

I actually went with free Yahoo e'mail and then GMail after I dumped Outlook and Outlook Express for security reasons. I won't use similar e'clients for security reasons. I like Hotmail (no beta crap there) but would like to replace my accounts at GMail and Yahoo with another quality free e'mail provider (or two) where secure browsers are happy to roam. Any other thoughts/ideas?

Re: Are Yahoo, GMail and others becoming dangerous?

            Thx,

Now I just have to figure out which sites like IE only, use boatloads of Java and Active X scripting, aren't beta testing, and which ones fine print policies I can agree to. Guess I must be willing to become a test subject here by trying 12 or more of them only to find two have not adopted the same beta server software as Yahoo and GMail?... Those two will surely go beta a week after I switch. Might be easier to look for a Java/Active X exploit in their server and hack these jerks back to before they wasted my time. This crap gets any worse and I'll go back to snail mail. Do you suppose most IT guys developing the server warez at Yahoo and GMail are from India or Pakistan?

I suggest you research the topic a bit more, as your being overcritical and too paranoid.

For starters, just because something is labeled as Beta, especially coming from Google, doesn't mean that it's an unfinished and buggy piece of junk.

If you can, you should really consider taking some time to do some more research.

                Thx,

Again, I was wondering if anyone else was experiencing these problems and/or could recommend another "specific" free e' service besides the dozen+ you mentioned with a Google search. I never implied that "beta" meant junk. I'm presently beta testing Gran Paradiso for Mozilla and think it's light years ahead of its predissessor. Paranoia is for dope smokers, and criticism is all that's available when the service is free and not paid for. I will continue to do research on companies that would risk their clients safety using such server formats.

If it is that bad, why not look at some of the open source email clients which work with these? I use the Mail client that came with my Mac for gmail and other PoP email accounts without any problems.

Who gave you the idea that Firefox and other Mozilla browsers were safe? Safer maybe, if you want a safe browser use Lynx :-). If you want safe e-mail host your own with a linux box, and a dynamic ip service from your home connection. I'm not a big fan of free accounts call me old fashioned.

I am pretty sure I have mentioned this on here before, but it still never ceases to amaze me that so many people that would rather cut off their pinkies than let you know their real first name will gladly sign up for gmail when they KNOW that their mail is being 'read' by Google in order for them to do their marketing crap.

I guess Gigs are more important than privacy
                      perl -e 'print pack(c5, (41*2), sqrt(7056), (unpack(c,H)-2), oct(115), 10)'

Hmmm, free and secure? Look into Hushmail, and don't run their java Encryption Engine on your machine if you don't want the Feds reading your mail.

Thank you very much erehwon for the suggestion. I'll give it a test drive and kick the tires too. Also good heads up on their Java Encryption Engine as I see they have an opt out for that. Xor.. did not know Lynx was available for anything past NT.

Yes, I did. It is also available for the MAC if I'm not mistaken.
