  • Geoffrey "Monkey" Bennett Has Passed

It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that I report the passing of Geoffrey "Monkey" Bennett who collapsed last night while jogging and couldn't be revived. Geoffrey is survived by his wife and young daughter.

His funeral will be held in Austin, Texas later this week.

Geoffrey was a good friend and will be missed.

While you may not instantly recognize the name Geoffrey was the raucous ringleader of such infamous Hacker Jeapordy teams as Deux Sex Machina and Oh My God Ponies. He routinely wore unique hats around the con last year it was between a set of Unicorn ears (complete with horn) and a large Cat in the Hat, hat. There was also the rather loud jester hat. A couple of years ago he organized an impromptu "La Resistance" meeting complete with Punch and Pie. This year he was planning to submit a paper with his 4 year old daughter show casing how even a 4 year old understands cross site scripting making her the youngest DC presenter ever. He has been an attendee of the con since DC-7.

Perhaps some of us can get together this year during con at Quark's and have a Warp Core breach or two to remember and celebrate the good times. Or just look for the guy with a Goatee wearing a DC-1 shirt (me) and maybe we can slip off for a quick pint.

Damn, that really sucks. Geoffrey was a freaking riot; there was always a good time everywhere he went. He will be missed.

A familiar face (well, head) since I've been going. This is quite a shock.

      My condolences to his family

He was a great person and a sweet friend. So many great conversations... I remember a night by pool one smoking cigars and playing with his hats at 4am.

He will be missed dearly. His poor family... My heart goes out to them.

I just placed a face to the name and realized I knew him. He was pretty much a constant at ever Defcon, and for some reason we'd always seem to bump into each other in the hallways. Now I'm really fucking bummed. I had chatted with him not too long ago and had some questions for him when I saw him next at Defcon..

I return whatever i wish . Its called FREEDOWM OF RANDOMNESS IN A HECK . CLUSTERED DEFEATED CORn FORUM . Welcome to me

Sadly i, too, am failing to connect a face to his name. Could I ask... is there a photo URL that someone would care to share?

EDIT: someone shared a link with me in private. i cannot believe that i did not ever get his nickname... Laz and BobCat would typically just introduce him as "Geoff" (which i always had misunderstood as "Jeff") but yeah... essentially all of you knew Monkey and we always enjoyed whatever he was up to.

I am so very saddened by this news and my heart goes out to his friends and family. Unless those closest to him think it crass or uncouth, I would strongly support a round of Warp Core Breech's being raised in his honor and memory this year.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I think he would have wanted us to remember him through a toast and pardon the pun "get drunk as Monkeys" his honor. Fr0cat and I will put something together and announce it closer to con.

i don't think that's him, from what i'm seeing on your photos page. i could be wrong or it could just be a slightly strange picture. still, that's not who i was thinking of when someone else clarified things for me in a PM.

Geoff is sitting next to the guy in the cat in the hat hat. He's got the ears on with the unicorn horn.

ok, right... the image was so large i had to scroll it in my browser window and didn't scroll past the cat in the hat guy.

I had a lot of fun with Geoff at ShmooCon 4 this year, and wish I could have gotten to know him better. The Vegas 2.0 team always had fun competing against him in the Hacker Jeopardy contest. He will be missed by us all.
