if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

I also picked up a nice shiny DVD at Walmart. It doesn't seem to be very hard to find.

              "wargames"

hmm the best thing i can think of is to set up your own 'wargames server' that way you can start off at your own level and experiment anyway you want with only your knowledge restricting you [and $$ of course...] most wargames i have found have only been suid [set user id i belive] games. where essentially you are trying to escalate your level of resticted access to a higher less restricted level using hints and "holes" built in by whoever is hosting the wargames. in my opinion this doesnt allow for "real-world" penetration testing. of course there are those out there that arent suid but setting up your own box i think is the best idea. besides this will allow you to learn attack as well as defense. if you are resticted by $$ i would check out www.roothack.org which is hosted by www.hack3r.org another thaught- if you set up your own box you can simulate local as well as remote testing i.e--connecting to your braodband connection using a dial-up connection simulating remote pen. testing. good luck ! =]

It'd be cool if there were ongoing contents similar to this, for teams of hacks to test there sec. suave against each other..

Anyone know what happened to rootwars? It was this sort of thing, but it seems to have disappeared.

                    War Games

Or, if you're really into getting bad info, loose moral values, and useless hacking tips... you can always look up the Crack Whore and let her teach you how "Hack Legally".

                    hahaha

If you are referring to rootwars.net, bunch of cool guys, I hung out with them in Atlanta. They seemed to have their stuff togther but their listings didn't seem as if they were good listing of servers. The site now leads to one or the rootwars guys personal sites and it's mostly personal site now.
