Re: China Wants U.S. owned Hotels to Filter Internet during Olympics
I'm actually surprised that an American company is allowed to own a property over there.
As for staying home, that would probably be best for me, because I could see myself getting off the plane there in Bejing and asking a guard "where is Cinnamon Square is, you know that place where the government ran over all those people with tanks?"A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

Re: China Wants U.S. owned Hotels to Filter Internet during Olympics
i'm sure there are plenty of other places on the 'net where I can read loads of accounts of the political wrangling, power-brokering, and outright bribery or intimidation that went on... but would anyone here care to clearly and concisely explain to me how a nation like China obtained the hosting rights for the games? I mean, i know it's always a huge to-do when nations vie for that privilege, but who actually decides and why would this group (which i assume is a multi-national panel) bestow such an honor (well, some folk think it's an honor, i find the whole notion of the games to be really boring and silly) on a part of the world that many find so objectionable?
of course -- if viewed from a non-western / non-american perspective -- one could easily make the case that the games have been hosted loads of times in the United States, a nation whose policies a lot of other folk find objectionable in manifold ways. i suppose in one way or another a large segment of any population will bitch about where the games are held and who the hosting country is.
eh, i'll likely just google and check wikipedia. was just looking for anyone's unique take on it here, too. (mods please move to "social" forum if need be, since this is decidedly less techy than the original post. or just /dev/nul it if more folks from the PRC show up and get too out of hand again)"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."
