  • Cowtown Computer Congress - Kansas City Hackerspace

I have been kicking around the idea of starting a hackerspace in Kansas City for quite some time. There is a local organization who is opening a technology incubator north of the river and they have extended an offer to give us a great deal of square footage for a very reasonable price.

What we need to do now is to begin the community organization to start making plans and getting commitments for involvement.

This Thursday, May 29th, we will be having a meeting at 6:00 PM at the Flying Saucer Draught Emporium in the Power and LIght District. The bar itself is located at the corner of 13th street and Walnut. If you have any questions, drop me a line.

We have outgrown the original meeting location of the Flying Saucer and will be meeting at Tomfoolerie's on the Country Club Plaza at 1800 on Thursdays for the foreseeable future. Things are moving along nicely and we hope to get a preview of the space over the next couple weeks.

    (hint: it's huge)

Things have been moving along swiftly with the Hacker Space. I encourage people who are local, or otherwise interested in watching the process of putting a similar community together in your area to watch the Google Group for updates.

Our current meeting location is the Java Naught coffee house in Westport. We meet each and every Thursday at 1800 central time. In addition for those who can't make it we have a weekly conference call on Tuesday nights at 2000 central time. In person meetings are great to meet people and talk about projects and ideas...the conference call has recently been rather focused on the numerous administrative issues which are presented with a project of this size and scope.

We have also had a number of local organizations affiliate including the following:

      DC816
      i-hacked
KC2600 (including the Johnson County splinter cell)
      KC Perl Mongers
      DotNext
      BarCampKC
      KC Robotics Society
      Inksome

We're filing our paperwork with the state this week and hope to have bylaws officially approved within three weeks. This will all culminate with our first event, Movie Night with the Cowtown Computer Congress in late September or early October. We're planning on screening the GRL Season 1 and Hackers Are People Too for those who didn't have a chance to catch it at DC16.

As a special treat, hevnsnt and surbo (of i-hacked) will be bringing out the graffiti machine for attendees to play with.

To top everything off, we're planning on holding the party on the roof of the Kansas City Central Library with all photons placed on the building across the street.

Hope to see you all there!

"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

We sucessfully incorporated as a Missouri not for profit corporation a couple weeks ago and tomorrow evening (September 18th) we will be meeting to adopt bylaws, elect the Executive Board and Managing Directors. The meeting will be held at our temporary, but most consistent, meeting place of the JavaNaut at 39th and Wyoming in KCMO at 1800 to get the ball rolling and we can obviously anticipate a rather lengthy session. Obviously we will be going out at the closest bar we can find to celebrate the birth of the midwest's finest hackerspace. We will commence the shit talking about our rank worldwide once we gain possession of the real estate. All other information you may need is up at the Google group and wiki.

On Monday, September 29th we will hold our first event...a Hacker Double Feature where we will screen GRL and Hackers are People Too (as discussed above) at Harry's Country Club in the river market. Of course the L.A.S.E.R. machine will be there for shenanigans following the shows.

We're kicking off at 8:00 so bring your party pants and take Tuesday off.

Due to recent events, we may soon be forced underground.

                  That is all for now.

We announced last night that we have secured a 1400 square foot facility in a cave complex. We're shooting for a week long grand-opening celebration filled with talks, workshops and other assorted activities for the first week of March. If you'll be in the area and would like to give a talk or just stop by...let me know.
