I agree with you wholeheartedly, sir. I am highly opposed to the idea of government having a say in who I am or am not kin to. If I wanted state-legislated pedigrees I'd re-incarnate as British royalty. ;)

I respect folks who do have committed marriages and make them work and thrive, but I have to say I'm with Deviant on this one, can't see it ever as a place for myself.

Having just passed an anniversary and well into our third decade as a married couple, I can tell you that marriage is an institution that requires commitment. But the same applies to an insane asylum. My wife would agree with both sides of that, too.

Marriage as a life-long thing works for some people, and not for others. It also works serially for some people. I know several of both genders who apparently like marriage for stretches of a year to a decade, and then find someone else. Rinse, repeat. It seems to suit them.

I missed my sarcasm tags. Its quite alright, I rant when people refer to a hearse as a hearst/hurst. My 1973 Cadillac was not a branded shifter or part of some wealthy family, damnit.

Do you think the world would actually be a safe place if everyone had such a custom dictionary? *is glad there is only one of those*

I always caught rides from my friends, who for the most part own jeeps. In your sense. To the point that you can't tell the color of the vehicle because it is covered in mud. This is where the local friends can probably give some insight or direction in where to get such a vehicle.

no... every rental place offers late-model, automatic tranny "jeeps" which by my definition do not qualify as jeeps.

if you can't take the top off in one smooth motion (read: "no complex interlocking roof rig") and if you can't take the doors off legally (read: "rearview mirrors belong mounted to the body and not the damn doors so they remain in place when you pitch those two worthless hunks of metal") and if you don't have three pedals at your feet (read: "jeebus fucking christ... who the hell puts a goddamn automatic in a jeep!!?!" **breaking things**) then it's not a jeep.

There is a particular matter of syntax to be considered when i speak...

Jeep (capitalized) - a vehicle manufacturer which is now a sub-division of the Chrysler Motors company. They produce a number vehicles under the Jeep name, a small few of which are still actual jeeps.

jeep (uncapitalized) - a lightweight, stripped-down, stick shift, motorcraft capable of four-wheel drive operation which was originally designed and used by the U.S. military for reconnaissance, materiel dispatching, and transport of small numbers of individuals quickly across short distances. Civilian models of this vehicle were produced in post-war years by the Willys and Kaiser companies, who were later absorbed into the American Motor Company which itself later became part of Chrysler. see also...

Those are both jeeps (lowercase) in the proper sense of the word. They are stripped-down and have very sparse interiors...

... and not much else. Seats, a Steering Wheel, Speakers, and a Shifter... that pretty much does it for me, as far as what a vehicle needs in the passenger compartment. Compare this, now, to the modern vehicle produced by the Jeep corporation along these lines...

... that may be a very fine vehicle to own, drive, etc... but it's not a "jeep" (lowercase) by the way i define the word.

Heh... put in simpler terms... "if you can't fold down the windshield without the use of tools, it's not a jeep. It may be a Jeep, but it's not a jeep."

We need some federal oversight and legislation..."

I'd say walk for most of the tourist part down by the hotels.

Should you want to go see the Arizona, go EARLY.

The Hilton Hawaiian Village has a place with kick ass sushi, the other Hilton in a ways has a loco moco bigger than most human heads.

I'm not sure on the jeep, every rental place rents them so it shouldn't be that big of a deal. I'll give some of my friends a call out there and see if anyone can show you around or something. Or if they know a few secret spots they are willing to show some pasty tourists.

totally. i don't know if i missed the crossing of this particular rubicon since i haven't rented a vehicle in ages... but at some point in the past 10 years or so it seems like all car rental companies completely pulled all manual transmissions from their fleets.

wtf. in vegas it was sad enough that bruce and heidi were forced to rent a mustang with an automatic... but a goddamn jeep without a stick shift? that's gotta be illegal in at least half the states of the union.

out in hawaii i'm hoping to just rent an old CJ jeep or something... throw the top, doors, and everything else into the room and leave them there all week, and just get back and forth to the con and any touristy places we want to hit. is that too much to ask, cruel world?!?

    Where are your wiki recommendations?

What we are ideally looking for would be a place to get a cheep jeep or something to rent. I know that isn't what you were referring to, but it doesn't hurt to throw things out in the open.
