  • Defcon Mailing List History

If you're on the mailing list, this will seem familiar. Live with it.

Back in the days when I thought backups were for sissies, if I thought about them at all, I had an early archive of dc-stuff, in one of its earliest permutations. In fact, actually, I was also subscribed (if memory serves) to a list which was almost entirely one-way, and announcements from dtangent.

This was *before* dis.org, btw. I seem to recall that the email came from fcw.com, or something similar (could have been dot org, but I'm almost positive it was dot com). I got stuff as well from cyberspace.com via ftp (that one I'm sure of), but most announcements showed up, for me, from the cu-digest, over on good old Usenet.

Anyone here that remembers which place those early emails came from? I would think that (except for The Dark Tangent himself) most people currently on the dc-stuff mailing list joined only after it showed up on dis.org (which currently exists only in memory, and on archives.org, for the time being).

Even the beginnings on dis.org was a very very long time ago. Mercy. I know that the listserv software (pre dis.org) was not state of the art even then, but more in keeping with those times, than with nowadays. I'm amazed to see that I have announcements for DEF CON from dc2 onwards, but wish I'd save the entire originals, rather than just the text.

remember them? hell... there was one defcon where i woke up branded by them...

"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."
