    Defcon @ the Venetian?

Anyone know what this article is referring to?

The switches are integrated with virus protection but they can also detect suspicious guest activity. The Venetian recently hosted a Defcon hacker conference and the network thwarted attempts by conference attendees to infiltrate the Venetian network.

I believe BlackHat was previously held at the Venetian, but that was more than "recently" ago (1999?)...

Somehow, I think this would have garnered some attention, if it had happened at either BlackHat or DefCon...

In both cases, the Venetian network alerted Vollmer and other IT officials to unusually high bandwidth usage. Then the Venetian's ISP noted a slew of hits against its DNS servers coming from the resort. The ISP then handed over the IP addresses of the perpetrators to the Venetian and the room-to-room roundup began.

I've been going to Defcon since 99 and sneaking into Blackhat about the same time. Google shows that the venetian opened May 3, 1999.

I think the reporter and/or IT director is talking out of their ass. I think DT should make them issue a correction that we have never had an event their.

Googling for "hacker conference +venetian" returned this link about the fourth one down.

I checked, Black Hat was at the Venetian in 1999, must have been right after it opened. But I'm pretty sure they didn't install 10G Ethernet back then. ;)

That is just what *they* want you to believe!

I heard it is still going to happen, but only with the most elite hackers that are able to decode uber-leet, super-fly, Double-XOR, HTML over public HTTP encoding technique. Maybe it is kind of like a rave, where you have to be able to decipher the cryptic clues, or know someone that is able to do the same.

Great. How will I ever find out when the real Defcon is going to take place?

Does anyone have what they call "web browser" "warez"? I heard about some called MSIE, FireFox, Opera, and Safari, but nobody will give me a copy. I want to be able to decode the encoded HTML over public HTTP!

                  [Back to original topic:]
That is a strange comment. Perhaps article feedback would be a good idea. :-)

I found this article a few weeks ago in my google alerts, and mentioned it to Nikita. She promptly wrote them a letter informing them of their error, but I haven't heard anything since.

                        Should hold them too it.

Or even better, inquire about actually moving Defcon there and if their network will handle us :)

Tunneling temporal paradox over DNS is so hot right now.
