I've noticed that you still can get more screen and hardware with a Windows based laptop than with an Apple for the $. Problem is now that you know NVidia went south on you do you get ATI? I'm at that crossroads right now on upgrading an older eMachine (when they were well made) to one video chipset or the other (it becomes a doorstop to go as an alternative). The dudes at Gateway suggested a 256 NVidia PCI (yes I know slooooow) card over and ATI card just because I said I need some graphics punch. I want a well made card with good cooling and I've been a big ATI fan in the past.

    Some better laptops?

I've had a Fujitsu Seimens Lifebook for around five years now (S6120D) and even after taking quite a few abuses (including its processor's heat sink copper ends being accidently pulled off by a plyer and the metal pipe carrying the heat from the processor have ripped from the same plyer too assuming they were causing rattling noises in the fan the resides next to them blowing the heat out of the machine) that damn thing still works, and the rattling noise hasn't stopped either :(, although now it requires a cooling cycle of about 15 mins after every 2 hrs or so.

I love my MacBook - it may be a 13.1 inch screen but it has performed flawlessly.
The MacBook Pro I had previously was also a very solid machine as was the PowerBook G4.

With Parallels or VMware Fusion you can run any other operating system you want, I have virtual machines for Ubuntu, BackTrack2, BackTrack 3, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Fedora Core 8, and Fedora Core 9 and frequrently run two of them simultaneously along with the base OS X OS.

          i'm with thorn.

i really like my thinkpad x61. i have a dell from work but keep it at my gf's. i needed something lighter since i ride a bike to get pretty much anywhere. it is way more durable than the dell, too.

i've owned more dell laptops and every one--except the latitude i had back in '98--has had really horrible keyboards. on multiple occasions i broke keys off of my inspiron 8600's keyboard by catching one of their edges. ugh.

pros: super light. durable. eraserhead mouse. no stupid fucking trackpad or extra buttons to go with it.

cons: tiny resolution. horrible battery life (i need to get the extended battery) - it's like an hour and a half or something. suspend/hibernate is not reliable in ubuntu. it gets hot (what laptop doesn't these days, though?). the keyboard is kinda small. no optical drive (ultra portable).

i run ubuntu. i'd prefer freebsd but had trouble installing it.
