Someone told me congress is seriously considering a plan to put hardware into it's DVD-Rams and CDRWs to prevent duplication, anyone hear anything about this?

I have read about RIAA and other tech companies presenting such hardware to congress, but I haven't heard of any serious legislation to put that into place. It appears the more recent trend is taking away rights to the media alltogether.

How this will protect works, I'm not sure.. other than allowing more law suits, which really means more money for lawyers
I'll be sure not to buy any Congress® brand CD-RW or DVD-R/W media, that's for sure...if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

See http://frwebgate.access.gpo.gov/cgi-...2048is.txt.pdf .
Check section 5. To wit:
SEC. 5. PROHIBITION ON SHIPMENT IN INTERSTATE COMMERCE OF NONCONFORMING DIGITAL MEDIA DEVICES.
(a) IN GENERAL- A manufacturer, importer, or seller of digital media devices may not--
(1) sell, or offer for sale, in interstate commerce, or
(2) cause to be transported in, or in a manner affecting, interstate commerce,
a digital media device unless the device includes and utilizes standard security technologies that adhere to the security system standards adopted under section 3.
Section 3, subsection d and e spellout in very nebulous terms what this encryption would be.
But also check section 3 e 2 which seems to negate some of this:
(2) PERSONAL USE COPIES- No person may apply a security measure that uses a standard security technology to prevent a lawful recipient from making a personal copy for lawful use in the home of programming at the time it is lawfully performed, on an over-the-air broadcast, premium or non-premium cable channel, or premium or non-premium satellite channel, by a television broadcast station (as defined in section 122(j)(5)(A) of title 17, United States Code), a cable system (as defined in section 111(f) of such title), or a satellite carrier (as defined in section 119(d)(6) of such title).
So.........

Seems highly surpassable, but... I dunno. I guess I don't see the point of IDing them in the first place. Mass lockups?if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Like it really matters...
For every form of protection invented, there is inherently a form of compromise. Why? Because there is no perfect person and all these things are created by people.
Plus, I'm not totally convinced that there is much to worry about when it comes to copying DVDs. I mean, seriously, we've been able to copy music and VHS forever and it apparently hasn't caused the big wigs in Hollywood (or whereever) to go under yet.

It appears some people are just starting to figure out the whole available long before public release thing:
