Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
Yes, and they have served more than shite burgers. :-)
Okie. I am an adverse creature and don't really like you people (Lie number 1). It has been posited by people I actually like and respect to do some kind of noobish thing to acquaint said noobs with the vagaries of that which is DefCon. Ok, so, if anyone is interested, I will pony up and attempt to speed school folks who are interested (Why, WHYWHYWHY do I do this to myself, why?). The speed topics would include: Why you shouldn't annoy Priest; how NOT to attend a party; "That guy is Roamer and don't poke the beast"; "I am not here for your personal benefit, gee, why don't you shower?" and the ever popular, "Guess what? It's not all about you!" For some of the ladies? "Computers really are cool" and, "Vegas: It's really NOT all about shopping."
Seriously, for anyone who desires a clue? We (that is the pontifical "we") are putting together a forum for the noobs and the nervous. Oldsters who have behavior issues are also welcome to attend. It's the least that can be done for a group of people I don't care a rats butt about (Lie number 2).
We will convene in the parking garage prior to the TBBQ. Or perhaps the powers that be will give us actual meeting space. Stay tuned.
Regards,
Valkyrie

Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
I can only verify the last three years. Did not know about it my first year at Defcon but I am pretty sure five years is the correct number.Leave a comment:

Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
I'm pretty sure for the last five years there has been an event on Thursday, It's called the Toxic BBQ.
Then again I could have imagined it all with the large consumption of Wild Turkey 101 I've been know to drink at said event.

Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
On a broad note, I for one definitely think Thursday should have some events...
For some it's the break between one convention and another, but I show up on the Thursday usually and mostly feel like getting right into it.
Maybe something unofficial, but planned?
N00b talks seem like a decent idea, however I have a feeling not many "teachers" are going to be available for that... of course some people are very giving and very understanding, but the basics of this stuff are usually something that anyone can get a grasp on just by googling the topic they don't understand...
Not many people like to re-teach what should be common knowledge at a convention.
Note, that isn't a bash at anyone, as everyone starts somewhere, but it is a realistic view..Leave a comment:

Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
welcome to the DC community. it's great that you enjoyed your first DEFCON and we look forward to seeing you return.
short supplies of badges are often a problem, but it seemed like this year it happened earlier than usual. that's part of the way it goes with an event that has no pre-reg and does everything on-site with cash only.
i didn't even get a real badge at all this year, actually. that's just how it is sometimes. hopefully next time things work out better. or, you can always arrive earlier, hehe.

Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
Thanks for putting on Defcon 16, first one I ever been to. Look forward to the next and participating in it more than just lurking around.
This is a petty request but when I purchased my tickets on Friday there were no more lanyards for the badges. I took one of my shoe laces and made a make-shift badge holder. I also couldn't find any booths inside that we offering any (but I may have overlooked that)
I have plenty of these from home and plan to bring some next time. Like I said petty, but only thing that popped into my mind that happened to me and a few other people.Leave a comment:

Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
I always though Thursday was the "crash the Blackhat parties before going to Defcon" day/night.

I love your thinking....
ME: Go get me a drink, then I'll let you tell me all about how you are SUCH a security expert and how you have been 'hacking' since you were 2
... sorry for the thread hijack, but it was kinda funny.Leave a comment:

Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
I like it. I think we should do a newbie Precon or early friday roundtable, to get new folks into the groove of everything. Thur would be better, but not to late..

Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
I always thought Thursday was the day of rest between BlackHat and DefCon???One of the ideas we are trying to test-plan for is the idea of DEFCON starting more officially on Thursday. So many people are there already, we may as well have somethings for them to do.. sort of a pre-con con. That sounds like a good time to have one day workshops, 101-level talks, and who knows what else.
Question to everyone: What would you like to see on Thursday?
More seriously though... I agree with the 101 talks, or more round-table/panel type pre-con discussions.Leave a comment:

Re: Defcon 17 suggestions
I do like the idea of pre-con workshops, I think a lot of people would be into it. Me personally, I tend to arrive Thursday morning, as I'm sure many others do, aside from the the usual pre-con "shit to do" (getting badges, swag, checking in, etc.) there's not much going on. I'd personally like to see more of a social kind of thing for the newcomers but something that also benefits everyone, maybe small break out type sessions, or opening up the HHV/LPV, small things that people can come and go to/from without missing too much. With both the shoot and the TBBQ, adding small things to do for those who don't feel up to leaving the Riv area wouldn't be too far fetched I think. One of the ideas we are trying to test-plan for is the idea of DEFCON starting more officially on Thursday.
