I personally found that although MQ can be a life saver when it comes to directions, it can also completely face plant into the concrete. Beyond any reasonable explanation I can come up with, MQ once told me the fastest way off a military base in Georgia was by going on tank trails through swamp and marshlands (that I thought were not mapped). I guess I should have looked for the 'I don't own a jeep' check box.

Actually if you use gmail, you might find that the ads on the sidebar tend to relate to whatever is going on in your email conversations....Does anyone else notice this?

I know some people that built a house in a new rural subdivision in the summer of 2006 and their address still isnt available on google maps nor does their house show up on satellite view. I wonder how often google maps is updated?

This is one of those things that falls under 'general knowledge'. Seeing as Google is pretty open about the fact that they can help tailor advertising to those that may be receptive to it.

Yeah, every time I empty my spam folder I get ads for (actual) spam recipes.

It's more a line of text with a link than anything else. As such, its one of the few things that adblock doesn't block.

true, but its still scary that they're "reading" my email. Even if its not a human its still kinda big brother-ish. I mean they can compile lists of topics of conversation in my emails.... I can see someone easily looking at a few subjects strung together to imagine criminal behavior or whatnot.

You have the choice not to use them and host your own email.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

it is for this sort of reason that i opt to have my own email and never use GMail or any such service. PGP and crypto whenever i check messages... no inline ads for me, that gives me bad vibes, too, on some level.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Don't like it? Don't use it. I like gmail for certain things. I cannot imagine dealing with the cesspool that is Full Disclosure without it. I like its ability to handle spam. It sucks seriously for real email conversation on real lists, with people that are interesting, but I use actual email for that.

I find the Web Clip things interesting, and have, now and then, clicked on one. The spam and recycle suggestions get a bit repetitive after a time, but I have Hawaiian friends that adore spam, and once in a while I'll see the name of a familiar recipe, and it'll make me laugh.

I can see someone easily looking at a few subjects strung together to imagine criminal behavior or whatnot.
Seriously? It ISN'T people that see your email. Really. Some of the things you've posted here, on this forum that is globally searchable, and that will live on in Google and Yahoo forever, are incriminating enough. One doubts that anything Gmail can deduce will be nearly so interesting.

Yes, I do need more coffee.

Ok, So how good does PGP work these days with the NSA and homeland security policies in place? Everyone knows big brothers watching more so now than ever...

So is PGP really bulletproof these days? or wouldn't that just draw more attention?

You could host you own site and you wouldn't have to worry about it stuff like this. Get a Linux shell account(not free unless you know some kind soul with bandwidth to spare) and run things from there. There is no such thing as a free lunch. Most people don't realize just how expensive it is to run a network like google.com. Do they do it because they are really nice guys; no. They do it because there is an incredible amount of money to be made in data mining your information and reselling it. Oh but once you agree to their TOS, it's not your data anymore is it?

There are many fine intro's, faq's, howto's, and step by step instructions as well as pay for products that will not only do support but get you up and running encrypted in about 5 minutes. The magic word being SSSEeeeeaaaaaarrrrrccchhhhhh. Yes they work. If you are trying to hide stuff from the NSA forget it. Why would the NSA be interested in you Knoppix? Please go back on your medication or take more of it. Again people act like government has nothing better to do to than to spend FINITE resources and time on you. This stuff costs money to do and god knows time even with the fastest computers. They have more important things to do like build secret highways from Mexico to Canada

Remember what I said Knoppix there is no such thing as a free lunch.

If you want to find out if google.com is indexing your site:

                              * site: yourdomain is the way to do it. Of course if your site has been up for a very long time you are screwed anyway because this stuff never goes away anymore.

There are also programs like this for site indexing(see client list)
