Good question, but I never looked. Somehow I doubt it's Monster cable, because he's the kind of guy who would check out all advertised performance claims to the nth degree and then actually test the product to see if it works as stated in the ads. Plus, he's got an even lower tolerance for BS than I do. (If that's possible.)

You could just buy a 17" or bigger laptop and make everyone on the plane hate you. Usually anything with a 17" screen or bigger comes with a good set of speakers. My E1705 even has a small sub-woofer built into the case. If you can go digital out, or optical out. Recently discovered the TOS-Link on my Comcast Cable box and my Sony Receiver and it sounds so much better than going analog line out. If you ever wondered how they get 7.1 or 5.1 sound out of a laptop with only a digital out and a analog stereo mini; digital out takes care of all that for you. Plus it's one piece of fiber or coax compared with 6 RCA cables (FL,C,FR, RL, RR, Sub).

My 14" HP laptop has a crappy sound card and speakers. So I got an better SB X-Fi usb sound card and it sounds much better when used with headphones or external speakers..

Ps Just for the record there is nothing wrong with mono sound. Most commercial audio applications are mono. All mono means is that there is no sound separation and all the audio information comes out of one speaker. If you are in a bar no one person is ever in the center of 2 speakers for very long so for it to sound normal it must be mono. Otherwise one half of the room would get guitar and vocals and the other half would get drums and bass(not really but you get the point).

Of course at home I position myself in the center of all 6 speakers and get the full 5.1 effect. Very nice when playing Halo3, almost a religious experience.

Just because you can doesn't mean you should. This applies to making babies, hacking, and youtube videos.

17" or bigger laptops also double as covert body armor, and or an El Kabong club.

I'm thinking the next revamp of the family room may need 5.1 just for Halo 3 and the upcoming ODST.
