Re: Favorite netbook?
The jury is still out for me and netbooks. The technology is changing too fast for me to want to jump on the netbook train. I like a lot of power and want as much performance as I can get in a small package. Hell man I want it all!!! However with small being in I purchased an HP tx2500z(12 inch touch screen , 1280 x 800, dual core AMD ZM-86, 4gb) and like it a lot(under $1000). It runs Opensuse 11.1(as a tablet) well, as well as Vista x64 Ultimate without the eye candy which I removed. I use PGP-WDE without taking a real performance hit. The tablet is nice for planes if you travel a lot. Makes watching DVD's real easy in small seats.
Yes I know about Truecrypt. But you can't get whole disk encryption using GRUB as your boot loader. Also, I know this leet hacker dude(love ya man) who lost all his stuff at a hacker con using Truecrypt. Either he forgot his password, and/or his "dedicated" recovery disk and his data went bye bye. PGP uses a generic publicly downloadable recovery disk.

Re: Favorite netbook?
That is indeed hot. A little larger than the 901 series, but I'm sure having the speakers on either side of the screen, as opposed to under the netbook more than makes up for the size difference. Slightly larger keyboard probably doesn't hurt either."You have cubed asscheeks?"... "Do you not?"Comment

Re: Favorite netbook?
I'll admit to liking lots of power as I play quite a few games, after going to a couple security conventions in the last year, and taking a job that involves lots of travel, my laptop is irritating the crap out of me. It's 15 inches, and once you add that and the books I bring with me (god, I can't wait for a decent e-book reader I can get technical texts on), my laptop bag drags on my shoulder something awful. The ten inch netbooks fit perfectly in the shoulder bag I habitually carry with me everywhere anyways. Fits a nice thick book, a first aid kit, binoculars, flashlight, and other assorted items. Be Prepared, that's me! lol.
I have been considering the smaller 9 inch ones, simply b/c of cheapness. I just am not sure my fat fingers will work real well on typing on them. That and my absolute lust for a tablet and touch screen.

I just recently got an Acer Aspire One 8.9" 120gb, and to tell you the truth I notice no difference in size than the 10" dell. The keyboard and Track pad is WAY Better. Since my desktop blew I've been doing all my work on the acer and that speaks volumes. For the price it was a damn good deal. Anyways, above all of everyone's opinions and what you think you will like. TRY IT IN PERSON First. I know exactly what you mean about space, and the mini's/netbooks are great but you need to test them IRL first. Go to fry's play around, buy retail and return it within the window if you don't like it. Or take at look at what people are using at Defcon, respectfully of course."Haters, gonna hate"Comment

Re: Favorite netbook?
I've been looking at the new 13" Macbook *****Pro****; drool; 8GB max(if you can afford 4gb ddr3 sodimms); drool some more. If it had an express card slot, a built in WWAN adapter, and a removal battery(cries WHY WHY) it would be so very very irresistible. I think the folks at Apple are becoming BORG like.

Re: Favorite netbook?
Unfortunately the only ones I've found to play with have been a 9 inch EEE, which was too small, and the 10 inch HP mini's, which led to a few typing errors when I played with it. This is one of the reasons I'm seriously looking at the NB205, the keyboard is full sized and supposed to be phenomenal. The mouse pad is large as well, and doesn't have those ridiculous side buttons. I'm surprised that none of them use the clit mouse. I rather liked those.
The desire for a 9 inch is more about not spending $400.00, but my concerns for keyboard size override them unless I can find some more examples to try typing on. I live near NOVA, so I suppose I need to find a weekend day and start shuffling around electronics stores.

Re: Favorite netbook?
I've been enjoying my Dell Vostro A90 (mini 9, but all black). They positioning of some keys on the keyboard are a little annoying but I've gotten used to it enough not to want to throw it.
It runs OS X and various Linux distros well enough.Comment

Nice nick Daft...
Russ loves his Dell mini as well-
I've been happy with the slightly bigger Atom based E^3 .

Re: Favorite netbook?
I took the plunge when I found a decent deal on an Eee 900. The 8g ssd leaves something to be desired, the small keyboard does take some getting used to, and makes it difficult to type accurately with any speed.
Now the nice thing about it is the large modding community. Its already got more storage space, and a few things that it was lacking. The biggest asset mine has though is the touchscreen mod. Combine the touchscreen with usb gps and an extermal hdd, it now acts as my, easily removable, carputer.
While not as nice as having a full built-in setup, I can use my netbook for working wherever I happen to be, mount it in the car for gps and music control while traveling, and take it out when I hit my destination. Perhaps not the best carputer setup, but having a single and removable device makes backups and updating easy.Of course its fully cooked... we had it set on "linen".Comment
