Riviera Recon (April 2009)

I just got back from a Vegas trip and I checked out the Riv again.

1) The splash bar is gone for good, they put a bunch of slot machines in the area, so there's no chance they're going to rebuild it.

2) The food court is mostly closed, it looks like they're working on the remodel, but they don't seem to be working very quickly. I'd guess it will be complete by con though. La Salsa and one other place was still open.

3) On one of the Monaco elevators, on the poster, behind the glass, is a sticker that says "defconbathroomcam.com" (see photo)

On the day I was there, on the front of the business section of the paper, was an article about Riv deciding not to pay their debt or something, plus there's a ton of stories about it. I'm pretty sure that even if they file for bankruptcy protection, the hotel/casino/etc will still be open. LVRJ is covering it: http://www.lvrj.com/search?keywords=riviera&x=0&y=0

Oh, and prostitution is rampant! A combination of people getting more desperate for money, less tourists, and apparently police apathy led to us getting propisitioned by several hookers over the weekend.

yeah I've heard (via some friends that live there) that Vegas is suffering horribly under the current economy.

I know this is going to be a silly question, but which one was the splash bar? Was it that little one among the slot machines by the elevators?

I am giving serious consideration to staying offsite this year. Bellagio has very good rates.

Yes. It was the freestanding floor bar that would see almost immediately when crossing from the convention space to the casino.

I am giving serious consideration to staying offsite this year. Bellagio has very good rates.

What do you plan to do with respect to the social aspect?

I'm thinking of a recent work-related party wherein I set up some videoconferencing equipment and convinced a large group of people to attend remotely. Now if I only had the drive to replace can labels in real time...

This is a good question, and primarily why I am still considering where to stay.

On one hand, the group that I am traveling with is mostly staying at Caesar's and/or the Bellagio. On the other hand, I do enjoy the utility of being so close to everything that's going on.

Plus you don't want to spend the whole time with people you know. The Riv has the big stage bar which is where I'm guessing the informal everyone-can-walk-up conversations will go on.
