    Re: "Secure Flight" Initiative

"What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet."

(note this only time you were ever see me quoting Shakespeare (yuk))

Anyway in American culture we honor and hold dear individualism. Yea individualism!!!! In other cultures they honor the family. Not only your fathers family but your mothers family.

For example (no cut and paste sorry)

    http://www.scribd.com/doc/94117/Who-...ula-Gunn-Allen

Unfortunately most computer systems are written in western countries that use only the first and last name. There are many people; evil people; out there that take advantage of this to obtain multiple ID's from other countries as our systems can't handle it. It's also the fault of these other countries that don't provide any means of physical record keeping. So it's left up to the families to trace back who they are as well as any claims they may have to land & property.

So all of our pro end of world'ers out there are no doubt looking for the RFID implants. Sorry to disappoint they will never work. There are far too many people out there with bodies, & belief systems that simply won't except implants. I mean I know people that are allergic to latex, as well as wheat and dairy. Can you imagine the outcry over implants.

We have to move to a system of multiple and'ed biometrics, it's the only way. Of course any DB where this information resides as well as path back and forth are open to attack and manipulation. But it's far batter than what we have now if identifying people is important to us.

Also, you really need to the world to agree on a standard as we become more global; good luck there.

So do I think adding middle names will make it more secure, no. More complex yes, some people have them some don't. Some get them as a matter of fact at birth others though a religious service at adolescence. Name record keeping after birth is left to self reporting at best.

Ps. We take so much for granted living in western culture. I just saw this news article on CNN and apparently they finally have the trains up and running in Iraq. So I'm watching the train go down the track on TV with all the happy people on board smiling for the camera and the train comes to a road crossing; no gates, blinky lights, or bells to stop the cars. Their idea of a signal system is whomever is present at the crossing stops the traffic.

So if all information must match passport vs drivers license does this mean eye color. They have my eye color wrong on my license. How many shades of eye color do they officially recognize. Is there a color standard from which to compare. Some mite say I have green eyes others hazel. Is there a lighting standard in place in order to properly back light the inspection station in order to properly identify eye color. Are TSA agents allowed to be color blind, are they tested.

My last DL I got before the one I have now had all kinds of information wrong on it. No height, no weight, no eye color. When it printed the guy told me to look at it and see if it was ok. I pointed out the errors and he just told me that it was too late, it'll get fixed on the next one in 5 years.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

My birth certificate doesn't have my middle name, my drivers license has my middle initial, and my passport has my middle name. My Defcon travel confirmation however doesn't as I wasn't asked when booking the flight. However my middle initial was asked for as optional information.

My eye color appears blue is some lighting, green in others and yet grey in others. They are officially green on my driver's license, So, before we go swirling off into flights of fancy (although the additional information you are mentioning could perhaps be required in the future, including your occupation and level of education) read the article and the TSA FAQ. Specifically it is stated that as of 5/15:

Full name must match on both official ID and airline ticket

Soon (August time frame) airlines will be required to provide Full name, itinerary, date of birth and gender to the TSA. Official ID and ticket must match the information provided to the TSA. (Domestic flights)

In October, this information will be required for International flights as well.

            Regards,

I booked 5/12 on the wire.

                Re: "Secure Flight" Initiative

My wife had at birth three middle names. She bounced around foster parents and kept the adopted last names. When we married she had 8 names. She has since changed her middle names to just an initial, and dropped the last names, so now she's down to three "names" with one of them just being a letter. I wonder what kinds of hassles she's going to get with that.

Perhaps we should do it like the aliens did in Enemy Mine and at each TSA check point you have to sing a song about your lineage. It combines American Idol and unique identifiers.

I prefer the method employed in Aliens 4. You have to breath into the sensor. Or we could do the method I recommended down at our plant. Rectum scan, since no two a$$holes are alike. To authenticate to the computer, you only need to sit down on a special chair. I'll leave the chair design up to your imagination.
