Unofficial need for DJs? Poolside music?

I touched upon this previously in another thread, but thought I'd bring it up in it's own to keep the thread on topic.

Aside from the "official" DJing events / B&W ball, is anyone interested in perhaps sponsoring some poolside DJs or anything of that nature? Being form Cleveland it would be hard for me to fly out a PA and a pair of decks, but if someone's willing to come up with that stuff I might be able to come up with a mixer, etc.

I'd love to bring a small stack of vinyl to spin. I know folks everywhere whip out their cheapie stereos to blast crap music and figure I might as well offer to do some live mixing if anyone is interested. Likewise, I'd be willing to spin out for a couple of hours at a private party for the hell of it.

I realize it's a bit off topic, but for me, computing and electronic music are intertwined. I can't have one without the other.

I wouldn't be able to help, but it does sound like a good idea. If it was a variety of music and not too loud people would probably enjoy it. The only problems would be playing bad music (like the radios) and making it hard for people to have conversations.

Of course. If I did have the opportunity I wouldn't be shaking the AP to its very foundations. I"m not saying we have to have 80,000 watts of sound, just a little bit of artistic expression outside of the confines of the AP rooms.

Oh well, just an idea, but I'd like to spin a couple of eclectic sets. Granted, there will be some people who will hate the music. Honestly, I hate their stuff just as much, but you didn't see me telling them to turn down their shit. I just moved to another pool.

This sounds like a good idea give the accordian guy some competition.

If you can get some equiptment and keep it back to the grass where you can be relitivly sure it won't get to wet throw a different type of sound at each pool and mix it up between pools i think this would be great, it also may allow for any overflow of D.J.'s for the dance/music/rave/whatever area as it was closed to allow for more room durring daylight hours last year.

The problem is equipment. Being from Cleveland, I can't easily transport even something small like a pair of powered JBL Eons, 2 Tech 1210s and a mixer. I am, however, willing to talk to people more "local" to see this happen. Maybe not at *every* pool, but at least somewhere on the grounds.

DJ idea

I like the idea of a DJ too, maybe even one that will do requests? Be prepared to be handed CD-RWs, SmartMedia and Compact Flash cards with MP3's on them for playing!

Well I live here in vegas I I will probibly have my records with me if need be. But I am also friends with a a guy who throws raves here in town I'll see if we can grip up some audio equiptment from him or what not. I'll have to see whats up, I also have a set of tables and so dose my other friend. I rather not bring my tables but i'll see.

DJ Pepse was talking about doing this last year (exept we were joking about making it portable). I'm actualy not sure about the idea. This year when we asked for feedback about the con, the vast majority of replies made some comment about the music, either ranging from 'you could stand to loose the Dj room' to 'get rid of all the fucking raver kiddies'. By putting the music in its own room we isolate it. Those that want to hear it, can go on in and have (IMHO) a great time, those that dont like it, can avoid the room all weekend. By putting it out by the pool, you are choosing to subject those out there to what you consider 'good' music. Asking them to leave the pool area if they dont like it would be a bit silly. I say 'good' music, cuz everyones opinon is subjective. I personaly really like DnB, Jungle, some progressive Trance. From what I have read from previous posts, most of you would agree that those are 'good' kinds of music. I also like country music and big band dance music (waltz's and polkas mainly)..I'm sure I just lost a few of you right there. There are folks out there (like a buddy of mine) that consider anything that dosent have analog insturments in it to be 'complete shit'. So your idea of a good time, may vary greatly from the guy sitting next to you. Some folks want to hear gawthic music, some industrial, some country, some rock-n-roll, and some dont want to hear any at all. My opinion, take it as you will, is to keep the music indoors. Either in the DJ room or in one of the many hotel room parties that go on every year. I would hate to see someone get their gear thrown in the pool because some angry con goer 'dosent like that techno shit'. Also, if you do perform in any kind of outside venue, dont forget, Vegas heat + vinyl = bad news..I managed to melt a few records a while back by just leaving them in my car for a few hours in 80 degree weather..

Actually I retract my previous comment I couldnt agree more with ya noid I kinda felt that the dj room was kinda cheasy last year. Now if the dj for the pool was just there for a specific party then thats kinda a different story. Have the party the music is there and then packup so the pool is free again after the party i dunno its an Idea.

But Im still gonna bring my records with me.

I liked the setup last year, but I wanted to see that room 'so something'. The room really dosent serve a purpose other than making Defcon appealing to the 'tune in, turn on, drop out' crowd. Now I spent a great many years with that crowd, they really dont have a place at Defcon. This year we're gonna do it different. We want to make the room a much more functional place. Yeah I do like the idea of a chill out area its alot better more relaxed plus it gives peopla place to sit rather ten the floor in the hall.

To begin with I was all for the music poolside outside but after some considderation and reading the plans for the revamped DJ area, I'm with Noid. When I said I was all for poolside music that's what I was picturing it as, more background music than loud and intrusive someplace to sit back and hear some decient music and still be able to kick back, talk about the finer points covered in various talks, and maby grab a drink or two. With the refineing of the DJ area they've seemed to cover all the above items and added air conditioning.

Well, I'm tending to agree with you now, too. Although, I have to admit I'm quite a fan of polkas, myself.

Well, it was just an idea, apparantly a bad one at that. It was worth my time to throw it out as I think we all learned a little something in the process.

As I said before and said again, it will certainly be interesting this year.
