Automated inventory tools

Found myself some work doing tech assessments for a product migration and part of it needs to be a full inventory and map of the network. Typically small - medium sized nets, I'm guessing one subnet in most cases.

I'm looking for anything I can plug on the network and build a diagram and inventory of hostname,OS, services, etc. Cheops used to be the tool for that, but it's ancient now and I'm wondering what programs people might know of to smooth out documenting a network.

I still use Cheops and SolarWinds because quite frankly, they work. I also would like to know of any new inventory tools people may have run across.

If anything this will get me everything I need and more but I'd have to touch each computer, but that's not as big a deal give it's 10 to 20 stations.

Just trying to save myself on time on site and in the presence of users

http://www.networkview.com/ is quick'n'dirty. It will scan whatever size net you want, scans about six or so well-know ports on each machine (80, 110, etc.), and produces a nice diagram for that can be printed out, put in a client report or, reviewed later at your convenience.

That might be enough to do the trick. Beats filling out Visio by hand

10-Strike makes a few good tools for that. Prices are fairly decent for small-mid nets, too. http://www.10-strike.com

It doesn't diagram, but there's AutoScan. It's in backtrack, but needs updated. There's also a version for windows, mac, opensolaris, and the nokia N810.

Speaking of Visio, MS makes a free tool for security scanning; the Microsoft Baseline Security Adviser (MBSA; version 2.1 is the current release). It will do a network scan, find basic vulnerabilities with MS products (patches not applied, too many administrator accounts, etc.), Visio has a plugin that allows it to talk to MBSA and add the scan results into a Visio diagram.

I still prefer NetworkView for doing a simple map, but if you are planning on doing any vulnerability assessments on MS boxen, the MBSA is one more tool for that may be work using.
