    Re: Discovery ripped my premise

I've calmed down a bit. I've got a couple slides frameworked for when the show drops and I get a look at the actual produced show.

Hopefully it will compliment my talk and some of my ideas. I'm aiming to make it so that you don't need to have a stacked deck of hand picked 'survivors' in order to start rebuilding society. I approached things from a disaster recovery point of view used in IT. Worked rather well, hope you all think so.

Awesome. I just set up a reminder on my phone to notify me 15 minutes before the presentation start time.

Render, 'Prez, I don't think you have anything to worry about as far as the show cutting into your audience, let alone detracting from your content in any way. If anything, I'd view it as a different perspective on the same subject matter, which in the end, can only compliment your talk, and for the audience, compliment the content of the show. Although, I have to admit, the show's timeslot is a hell of a lot better if you ask me ;)

I never understood the "reality" shows. If there's a film crew it's not "reality". Survivor Man is about as close to reality as shows can really get. They really want reality, they should put a shit ton of hidden PTZ cameras on an island, dump a half dozen people off and tell them you'll be back in a month.

...and give one of them a map to a hidden stash of weapons a cooking pots.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

Forget about your regular old run-of-the-mill zombies.

Now, Robot Zombies with a Taste for Flesh....that is where it is AT these days. ;)

Yes but if it was never alive in the first place, can it be called a zombie?

These and many other questions are what keep me up at night.

You know, for a guy who, until recently, lived at the North Pole I can't tell if your being snarky with me or sympathetic.

At any rate, I'm looking forward to giving the talk anyways so my friends and family can stop listening to me go on about Zombies all the time.

Well, that semantically depends on what your definition of 'alive' is. ;)

What can I say, despite it all I love me some robot-flesh eating zombies. ;)

                            Re: Discovery ripped my premise

Bummer Renderman, always sucks when it feels like someone stole your idea.

I got excited when I saw the preview for this but I'm trying not to get my hopes up. Its probably going to be unrealistic, purely on a psychological factor people would be going though (not to mention everything else). Too bad they're not going to have a "Hacker" as
                            one of the characters.

I really think someone should make an awesome MMORPG based around an apocalypse or zombie attack. You could have character classes like "Doctor, Engineer,
Teacher, Criminal, etc, etc". I'm not a big fan of fantasy stuff so, WoW really doesn't interest me too much. But, I am drawn to the "size" and scale of the game and the community/teamwork side of things. Of course, zombie's in the mix just make everything more fun.

I recently finished Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" (he also wrote "No country for old men")
                            http://www.amazon.com/The-Road/dp/B0...7620866&sr=8-6
I think its quite accurate to post-apocalyptic times and is a good read. The beginning is a little rough/slow but it picks up fast and then its quite suspenseful.

Anyone else have good book recommendations about surviving an apocalypse, rebuilding society, etc?

                              Re: Discovery ripped my premise

I've been doing a bunch of reading but there's so much and my off time is limited which is why I stuck to movies.

Two books it's no secret that I'll be referencing and drew some inspiration and general thought processes are the 'Zombie Survival Guide' and 'World War Z', both by Max Brooks. The survival guide is mostly short term, bug out scenarios, WWZ deals more with the long term and the 'now what' question I'm trying to answer. Both are very good books for survival thought experiments as they make the silent agreement with the reader that 'OK, Zombies exist for the purposes of this book' and then approaches the 'problems' as if real making for some very logical thought processes.

I intentionally stayed away from any of the survival handbooks as I wanted to think more from the perspective of Joe Random Hacker caught in the middle of a disaster scenario with no specific planning and working backwards from there to find what would have been useful but not unreasonable to know ahead of time.

Probably giving too much away but you can be sure that it will be thought provoking.
