    Applause (or Boos) ...

I am a very fortunate two-legger. Over the years I have had relatively few problems at DefCon and have made many acquaintances and a few friends. :-) For this I am truly grateful. Now:

    Applause:

The DC101 Speakers: DT, Lockheed, Noid, Russr, ThePrez98, Deviant Ollam, Lost, Jackalope, Siviak, HighWizard - in the midst of your own DefCon stuff to manage, you took the time for a noob talk. Very classy. There are no words worthy enough. Thank you. Whatever you need from me whenever you need it.

The DC101 Monkey Butlers: Thank you for your volunteering spirit. You all showed up ready to make it a great presentation and it was. Thank you. And I am sorry that there was not enough for you all to do. We will know better next time around.

The DefCon Security Goons: You take impossible circumstances and turn them into the possible. I have watched you all over the years and every year I gain a greater respect for what you do. I bow my head to you all.

TW: Thanks for thinking of me. It was great talking with you. Hope all goes well. Keep the faith.

HighWiz: Mentor and friend. Thanks for keeping me honest.

Banasidhe: You are so rock awesome. You owned DC101 Logistics. You never fail and this is just one of the reasons I love you.

ASTCell: For being a really good friend and for getting DT where he needed to be when he needed to be there.

BlackOrchid and Chelle: You never fail to amuse me girl! You again won the "Prime Flirt of DefCon" award. That's two years in a row! :-) The ride to the airport was most awesome, thank you very much! I will see you and Chelle very soon. Party on girlfriends!

The two youngsters who played with the Enigma-E: I told you it was cool, didn't I? :-)

LRB RocketMan: For showing up and just being. Glad you enjoyed learning about CTF.

CJunky: Sure you want me to stay off your lawn? :-) Thanks to you and all those in your room for the kindnesses you extended to me over the weekend.

The HackerPimps: It was great to see all of you and the party rocked again this year.

The guys sitting on the couch at the HP Party: They were absolutely spectacular weren't they? :-)

The Mobile Music Command Post: Camping outside of the HP Party was pure poetry. Thank you! That gave me a great giggle!

    Boos:

The mental midget who made salacious comments regarding RocketMan and myself: RocketMan happens to be my dad. A more decent human being never walked the earth, save one. Which is more than I can say for you.

The guy who didn't seem to understand that "no" truly means "no.": Be grateful I didn't call a security goon or two. Or kick your ass.

Myself: I missed some things this year that I really wanted to do. I perhaps seemed to diss some people I didn't wish to diss. I apologize for that. I am still a work in progress so I ask for your tolerance. Hope to do it all more completely next year. Like having a solid plan!

I am sure I missed some applause. I apologize. You regulars always make it a fun time for me and the noobs always make for interesting conversation. I am grateful that circumstances have always seemed to work out so that I can come out and get a sip of brain candy that holds me over until next time. You all truly are amazing.

    Regards,

    valkyrie

      Re: Applause (or Boos) ...

I saw this thread and went "wow, I have a ton of people to give props to, there's this guy and that guy and those two, oh yeah and that girl, can't forget about here, wait don't forget about this group..."

Then when I looked at what I had typed I realized, I had more people to thank than I could actually accomplish. It was like a book, and unless i was going to add pictures in between every page or two, no one was going to read it.

Look, I am a guy who's been coming to DC for a while, some of you have gotten to know me, some of you like me, some of you I irritate but my props go to all of you. About every 5-6 years I need to take a couple years off, and I think "I am done with this" because I just get caught up in too much crap, but after I come back I realize that if I left this behind I would forget a lot of friends, and props to all of you for that.

I have some boos for the Riv, how about just letting us party in the penthouse, trust me, you'll have less problems if you let us all get hammered upstairs than you will forcing us all downstairs. Also, I hate bees, seriously, fuck those bees.

Sorry, it may not be formatted correctly, blame that other vandal, it's probably his fault anyways.

        Applause:

BlackOrchid: Thanks for introducing yourself, it was cool meeting you. Even if later I was told I just drunkenly stared back and mumbled. In case you don’t remember me I was the fat guy in the black T-shirt. :)

BlackJack: Lost my ass but met cool people and got free drinks.

All the friendly people: You know who you are, thanks.

        Boo:

Boo for poo: Having to go down to the lobby to use the bathroom at 3am sucks. Having other people in your room wake you up all night by doing the same sucks more. Is it really too much to ask for a bathroom that works? Oh Wait, it’s the Riviera.

Temp Badges: I got in on Thursday and still didn’t get a real badge. I could have waited in line during the Making the badge presentation, but screw that.
Next year I will stay the whole week.

          Best Con yet!

--Defcon 101: sorry I didn't end up helping more than lurking around the back? The talks were awesome though guys; wish I would have had an intro like that my first year.

I actually made it through some talks this year!

--A few of the talks I went to:

-The one about Russian Hackers in Livejournal from a sociological/psychological point of view was great because I don't think we get too many of that sort of talk, and it's good to hear a talk not about actual attacks but about hacker distribution every now and then. Particularly because the Slavic world seems to have their hands in the serious criminal business world pretty deeply.
-The outdoor survival ones with theprez and renderman - thanks for reminding me about how much I know about the wilderness and how much it would suck to go camping in the snow :).
-The ones about running and competing in the CTF: thanks for being excited, exciting and very informative. You've gotten me motivated again, and I bought the Ida Pro book and will hopefully get through my stack of reading this year.
-The fifteen minute tracks: deploying a rootkit while you already have root? really?

          --HHV

-You guys fucking rock. Haven't had more fun than that in *years*. I don't think I'm good enough at any of that to be able to volunteer but maybe next year I won't require so much hand-holdling?

          --Forum meetup

Glad I could actually make it this year, sorry I left so quickly (I felt off all of con for some reason), and it's sad that it's always small I guess, because I would love to meet all the people on here I'm terrified of.

          --Kady's

BBQ Burger is the win. Not giving us lemon slices in our water or rolls with dinner when the con was there? Hopefully that was a stock-shortage-while-con-was-there-coincidence instead of a fuck-you-defcon? And flea, you sexy beast you - nobody eats a baked potato like you ;).

--All the new people I got to meet
You all rock. Because people in RL are kinda boring.

Sorry I was no fun and didn't go to any parties or the BBQ...the Las Vegas climate (ass hot and dry) and the fact that I had to get up at the crack of dawn Monday made me feel like crap when evening rolled in. And Sorry to all the people I didn't get a chance to meet up with, and all the people I bumped into rushing down the hallways because the crowds of people always get to me.

So really, your ninja moves were just ass-hattery that you perpetrated against your fellow attendees. Good job.

Feel free to buy me a beer and I'll continue to explain in depth why you're an asshole.
Flea, I hate to say it, but *there shouldn't have been lines like that*

While I don't support people being anti-social assholes, there's 2 points you seem to be missing.

The hack depends on the line going beyond normal capacity. If the con processed the 10k registrations needed for the weekend in some sort of efficient fashion, hacking the line wouldn't even be needed, nor possible.

Secondly, for the 3rd year in a row we've had uber electronic badges, This is now the 3rd year in a row they've been late/run out/etc

(I don't count the first kingpin badge. The Blinky Eye Badge. That I count as a success, as it was on time, and I heard limited stories of running out)

I don't support line hacking, I certainly understand why it's happening.

Yeah call me an asshole. Personally, I just want a badge to be able to pass security. I don't care if it's a paper badge or the uber badge. I shouldn't have to wait in a line like that if I don't even care what the fucking thing looks like.

Honestly the badges have become too much of a focus, perhaps we should spin the badges off into their own con: Badgecon.

Can we please remember they're just a security device? Had I waited in a line to get that silly badge I would have been irritated. A Little lackluster this year to say the least. Without a doubt NOT worth standing in any line longer than about 10 minutes.

Furthermore, Reg didn't open till con opened. I tried to reg on wednesday, but I couldn't. WTF.

So BOOOOOOOOO to DT and DC for having badge issues 3 years in a row. Come on guys, get your shit together! I shouldn't have to wait 2+ hours to *give you* my money. I certainly shouldn't be missing parts of the conference to give you said money as well.

            PS: I didn't line hack

So by the time we could get a shift on the ground, 9am, the line had already formed it's self and when it did, it crossed that hallway. My guys were stretched thin and were putting out fires as best they could, this one hadn't been addressed yet. The minute I saw the line crossing the hallway, we began a process of moving the whole thing over to the other side. Once that was completed, traffic began to flow nicely.

Once again... ARGH! Poor fucking planning on DC's front. I don't blame the goons, but fuck man.

                Applause:

valkyrie: Thank you for letting me be a pseudo butler monkey. I know I wasn't able to find you a Ninja Badge, but I hope you were able to eventually get one.

Deviant Ollam: for a being a good sport when I jumped on your shoulders and got you to fall backwards. I know I'm a bitch and I'm really sorry we didn't get to hang out more.

Ceazar: You sir are one interesting person. I wish we had more time to talk, unfortunately I was so exhausted I could barely stand and I probably talked gibberish anyway.

Queeg: You are one sick bastard. But I still love you.

To the other two goons sitting next to Queeg: Is there any way I can ask for your forgiveness for his actions. You guys TOTALLY didn't deserve to have to see his potato lovin.

chronomex: AMAZING GUY!!! If you see him next year buy this man a beer!!! He took it upon himself to try and get a hold of me because I had left about 100 dollars worth of parallax gear where he was messing around in the retro room. We found each other randomly on Sunday and he had kept it so if he found me he could return it. Dude I wish I had had some money cause I would have given you a reward.

                Boos:
                Bee-con = Fail-con

The people who made the Goons have to shout

The Riv for charging 16 dollars for a cash withdraw

My stupid ass self for leaving the ATM card behind.

I'm totally going to try and go to more talks next year. I'll probably also try to be a bit more active as well.

                  In no particular order.

                  Ups to:

TommEE Pickles for giving me one more chance to prove that Cannonballs can indeed Run. And for inadvertently stumbling us into the aborted-Penthouse party, which gets me to the next one..

abbynrml and icetre: Thanks for welcoming the random dude with Pickles into your small gathering. I was quite enjoying myself until The Call came. And tres thanks for the delicious chili!

barkode & cnelson: for being pwnx0r buddies, even if we only previously hung out for one weekend. And for the raging kegger.

TechnoWeenie: for giving me confidence that my black badge will be there for me Sunday morning

Queeg & M: The Human Timeclocks! 'nuff said.

Zombie Farrah Fawcett: for being a great co-pilot and putting up with shit at the 'con for longer than you probably should have.

Jose (handle un-remembered): For awesome spin'age at Ninja.

Whoever rolled the chair into the Monaco elevator: an old one, but a good one. Much appreciated.

Everyone who Cannonball'ed: Thanks for coming out. We'll probably never see you again.

                  Not ups to:

The Riv: Seriously. GFY. Maybe the management was great to deal with, but any line-level employees I ran into were balls. This shit has been covered elsewhere, so not too much reason to rehash it.

People who made lascivious comments to Zombie Farrah: When you make someone who changed their underwear with their legs out the car window while driving down Las Vegas Blvd. uncomfortable enough to ditch 'Con, you really have a talent. Siviak, I love ya, but this includes you.

Salem: I heard your cider was the tits. I didn't get any. That makes me a sad panda. Probably my fault, but who likes accountability?

Whoever kept the Cannonball timeclocks in a box, behind a badge-required area: This may very well be Pickles' fault, but whoever's it is: boo. :(

                  That's probably it.

Using Ninja moves, and accordion physics, I found a vulnerability in the badge cue. Exploiting the split doorway architecture of Riv and the lack of goon security I found a vulnerability in the badge processing cue and successfully popped the badge cue which enabled me not to have to wait in badge cue for a second time to get a badge,
