Re: Reviving PokerCon?
Officially postponing PokerCon until next year. At this point it is more an issue of running out of time to get things right. If this is something you are interested in helping with next year, please let me know and we'll get started much earlier next time around.

Re: Reviving PokerCon?
Thanks. This is one of my options that I am considering, and will probably go down that road since chips are likely to be the biggest cost.I have a suggestion for the poker chips...instead of paying someone to print and 'stick' stickers on ordinary clay chips, have the stickers printed and get to work...will probably be a LOT cheaper to get the chips wholsesale, with a couple hundred custom stickers...can even set some time aside during con to have a 'sticker sticking' party...have /trusted/volunteers help get it goin...eh?Leave a comment:

Re: Reviving PokerCon?
That's a brave offer, from someone who has clearly not associated with me before I've had coffee. There are those who would suggest that I am somewhat unpleasant. Still, it isn't a matter of funds, it's a matter of just not wanting to go.
Please note that there wil NOT be Coffeewars this year. We're done. We've done it all, we've said it all, it's over. O. V. E. R.

It was fun, but nothing is forever. I'd rather be at home, gardening. There are too many people, and it's just not that fun for me any more. Perhaps I'll go next year; who can say?
Thanks for the offer, it was very kind.Leave a comment:

I still have an extra bed in my room -- if this is related to your not going to DC18, I'd gladly offer it to not lose one of the organizers of coffeewars!Leave a comment:

Pyr0, just wondering if either you or Russ has any word from the hotel as to whether the event passes their muster.Leave a comment:

"I'd be more interested in playing if it wasn't going to charity to be honest. I know that comes off dicky . . . . ."
Agreed . . .but you did sound like a dick.

It's becoming more and more likely that I will not be attending Defcon this year, so I must regretfully un-volunteer myself.Leave a comment:

Re: Reviving PokerCon?
Charity event: I had initially gone down the charity road, but this issue is actually a pretty big snag, and one of the reasons that a previous reincarnation of PokerCon did not make it off the ground. Charity events can get difficult to manage and approve (the Nevada regulations are mind-numbing), so this will probably not be a charity event. I did initially feel bad about going down this road, but really, there are many other opportunities for charity events at DEFCON, this event just won't be one of them.
Prizes: I have a few leads but I have not pursued them beyond "yes I can supply a prize" yet. Also, prizes could be another issue with getting the event approved. Officially speaking, as of right now, there are no prizes other than pride. That's not to say that there won't be prizes, but I want to get this thing approved first.
Tables/space: Tables and space would be hotel/con provided. While I have given my preferences for times, space will likely be determined by the con staff based on availability; given that this would be a new and unofficial contest, I'm fully expecting to get the short straw and understand that. We'll go with whatever time and space we get.
Cards: Paper cards are inexpensive; right now I am thinking of using standard paper cards perhaps until the last/last few tables, then maybe move to some plastic cards.
Chips: Chips will probably be the most expensive item in the budget. I'd love to get customized "DEFCON" chips, but customized chips can really push up the price quickly.
Volunteers: I have several volunteers so far, but again I haven't gone past "I wouldn't mind dealing" since we're waiting on approval. Ideally, we would have dealers for every table throughout the event, but that would take a minimum of 10 dealers (assuming 100 player and 10 players for table), and I don't know that we'll have that yet. At the least, players can deal the first few tables although I would not prefer that option. As always, any volunteers (for any portion of the event) are much appreciated.
Entry fee: My goal for the entry fee is keeping it as low as possible while still having a budget to pay for all the necessary supplies. Donations may help to keep the fee even lower.Last edited by theprez98; March 3, 2010, 06:19.Leave a comment:

Re: Reviving PokerCon?
Makes sense, so with approval are there any further steps that any of us can assist with?
My makeshift list of what will be needed: (this is your baby prez, I'm just offering my services if you would like them)
Tables - con provided most likely
Space - con provided
Cards - has anyone designed or designated where to buy the "official" cards at
Chips - Same as cards
Prizes - do we have any ideas or leads on securing prizes -- this could be a good one for people to get involved in
Volunteers to deal/pit boss the event
Determination of the entry fee - I'm guessing costs + donation to charity (could do multiples of charities as well)
Am I forgetting anything?Leave a comment:
