  • Money or Job Satisfaction?

I am at a cross roads in my career, and somehow this place seemed like a good place to vent / seek advise. I work for an Education Services Outsourcer, which is a fancy way of saying outsourced college helpdesk. I started out in Internal IT and built out several 500 seat Contact Centers (Primarily Voip).

I ended up in one of those “Temporary” roles that ended up permanent. I moved completely out of a technology role and into running an Operations Center responsible for capacity management and efficiency project management. (e.g. predicting Call Volume, for 700 individual colleges at a 15 minute level, then staffing)

Fast-forward 3 years later, The department is now built up and ready to be transitioned to a corporate environment. I now have the opportunity to move into a lucrative, but boring Program Management job or return to my previous track and take.

If the choice is between more Money, or doing something you enjoy, What do you do?

How many of you out there are in jobs that have nothing to do with your education?

Happiness over money any day of the week.

I have a degree that has nothing to do with my career, and I wouldn't give up my career for anything. When I was in college there weren't really classes other than programming, but had nothing to do with network administration.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

I'm working directly in what my degree was in (Computer Forensics and Security) but I've never been happy with the jobs I hold. They are always too static for me, I really enjoy an ever changing environment where I can work on multiple projects that "I" enjoy. So I compensate, I make as much money as I can at work and when I get home I work on the projects that make me happy.

This is a very personal question for a lot of people that we all have to come to grips with eventually. I would be very excited to see what others picked for their path in life.

So for me I recommend being happy, If you can be happy doing something like what I did then more power to you; if you would rather enjoy your time at work the I say tackle that option.

Doing something you enjoy is the much better choice! Of course, the caveat to that is that yes, at some level you do have to make it work financially.

My degrees are in Political Science and National Security Studies...needless to say, I am not doing that work. I never rule out going back in that direction, but for the most part I enjoy doing security work.

I'm stuck in the army field so I hate my job but at the same time I'm a network/system admin so I love it too. When I pick my college back up it will be in that same aspect of network/system administration.

I agree that you have to go for what you love to do, but definitely make sure you are financially set in that option!

As I general rule I'd go for happiness over wealth...if you can swing both, even better.

Go for happiness. I settled for my current job and even though it's a giant pay raise (and much higher salary for the area) it sucks.

Like others have said, if you can get both, go for it.

If you are young enough, go for money for awhile, but be sure to invest and save that money so that when you have enough, you can go and do what makes you nothing but happy. In the long run, happiness makes it all worth while.

I prop Eris for profound wisdom. Ultimately, living your passion, what makes you happy and jazzed and you want to get up in the morning? That's the bomb. But it is nice to have a cushion to fall back on if necessary. :-)
