    couple points RE: the DEFCON web site

    heya,

    i noticed two things when checking out the DEFCON home page just now.

    1. the "what's happening on the forums" feed seems to cast a very wide net, with stuff from /dev/nul appearing on the site's main page. it doesn't matter much, since this latest thread was related to the banhammer... but if some spammer posts links to GoatseViagraClassmates.com and gets /dev/nul'd it'd be a shame for that to wind up on the con home page, too, somehow.

    2. the CFP still lists "half day thursday" as one of the talk types... was that still happening or didn't it get scrapped in favor of thursday talks only being Val's DEFCON101 for Newbs.
    "I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

      Not an issue for spam. As mentioned in the rules, Spam is quarantined to a special place for me to review and consider better methods to prevent spam. People are advised to not reply to spam, as all replies are quarantined with the spam and disappear, too. It does not go to /dev/null, but is removed from public view. As a result, spam should not remain in the feed on what is current on the forums when viewed from the main site.

      The feed works based on recent, new threads, not based on threads with most recent replies.

      /dev/null is included in the feed, because it is public. /dev/null has to be public so that users looking to join the forums can see examples of problems and how they were resolved. We did experiment with making /dev/null private, and only viewable by logged-in users, but that caused more problems from new users that were unable to see the fail that is /dev/null.

      For that, you will have to get word from the people that might be organizing a "Defcon 101: Introduction to Defcon" presentation. I've talked to 3 of the organizers from last year, but that was a few months ago. My information might be out of date.
