  • What is PCB PWNage?

So you've hacked your badge and hung out in the HHV. Maybe you've attended a talk or two on how to solder or use FPGAs. Now it's time for you to get even more hands on. It's time for you to get your hands dirty in the world of Printed Circuit Board design! And to help encourage people to do this, we're holding a design contest at Defcon 18 and we're calling it: PCB PWNage.

PCB Pwnage is a contest where you will be asked to design a printed circuit board. Sounds simple? Well there's a catch... we're going to be doing this Iron Chef style: announcing the "secret" ingredient at CON which your board has to incorporate somehow. We're looking for people to make us the coolest board they can! Extra points will go to those who make a device designed to "pwn" something. Maybe you'll make us a GPS jammer, RFID zapper, zigbee fuzzer, smart card DPA board, or some other cool hack that will make us go wow! Entries will be judged not only on their coolness but on how well thought out and realistic the design is (ie just throwing parts and not connecting them right or them not actually performing as described). We'll also award style points for how neat and well organized the board is!

Why would you want to do any of this though? What's the payback? The winner of this contest will get a brand new Netbook with sleeve! We're also hoping to get the winning design fabricated! How cool is that?!

Now if you're saying that you don't know how to design PCBs or are confused, we'll have some resources for you. On Thursday there will be a half-day workshop on PCB Design in Capri Room 113 (link). We'll also be posting tutorial videos that you will be able to access during CON to follow along and get you started! Rules and FAQ will be posted shortly.

For more information and clues keep you eye on this forum and follow us on twitter @pcbpwnage and @cvorg!

Hope to see you all there!

This is super awesome. Also I didn't even know about the Thursday PCB design workshop - that is really a great idea.

What about Design For Manufacturability considerations? Do you lose points for autorouting? I'll wait for the FAQ. :)

Amanda (w0z) would kill at this contest...she's a monster. Gonna have to point her at it, see if she has any time.

Ninjas will happily throw in a Ninja Badge for the winner of this.

Boards should definitely be designed for Manufacturability, as we are hoping to get the winner's board fabricated. As for autorouting, we are still debating that. We may be choosing a specific software that has to be used. That should prevent people from showing up with the board already designed. We'll have more solid answers closer to the con.

Adding a ninja badge would be awesome! Thanks!
