  • BYOB - Bring Your Own Badge

What does everyone think of a new contest where people make their own badges prior to the conference and bring them to be judged. I think the contest should happen early in the Con (Friday afternoon maybe) so it won't detract from hack the badge on Sunday. It would be pretty open as far as what materials could be used and maybe there could be a few categories (artistic, security related, etc). I'm sure I could dig up some sponsors for something like this. I think this would be cool because badges are becoming a big part of Defcon and I think people could come up with some pretty cool stuff. So, what do you think?

Wouldn't that cause an awful lot of work for the goons trying to keep track if a badge is valid for entry or not?
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

I don't know, maybe a goon can chime in and answer that. People at Defcon tend to wear an lot of other stuff besides the official badge (Ninja badges, etc.). I wore Nixie tubes around and no goons stopped me. I definitely don't want to do anything to take away from Defcon or make it harder for goons to do a job that's already hard. I just think people would come up with really cool and creative stuff.

Re: BYOB - Bring Your Own Badge

well, it's a somewhat known concept to make 'avatar badges' - badges with your forum avatar - for the Forum meet. Perhaps that could be made into a full-blown contest, or a con-wide contest.

edit: I think what streaker69 is worried about is: your title makes it sound like you would bring the custom badge instead of a standard defcon badge. If so, I agree this is a no-no. A custom badge in addition to an admission badge sounds cool, though.
        It's not stupid, it's advanced.

Yeah, sorry about the confusion, you would obviously need an official badge of some kind (paper or circuit board). I saw several people wearing interesting things around people's necks during the con and it would be interesting to bring them all together and get a look.

Perhaps the avatar badge should be expanded con wide.... Oh it is people justdont have avatars on the forums to do it with... Mine was stainless steel with a scrolling led which seemed to get some attention.

I am thinking of expanding the idea next year to make a more multiple purpose badge for parties with no badge.

Anyways, all are invited to make an avatar badge, perhaps you would want to talk to nakita and lil'freak about making it into a contest that is judged as well. The cod piece was cool but so much to do in that short of a time... I hope next year has a better showing of the cod!

I was thinking of doing a codpiece, but didn't have time. For those who want to run with my idea - it was going to be a fish with an LED mohawk. (get it? COD piece? yuk yuk yuk)
